An online running coach is a human coach who writes and adjusts your training remotely, usually for $100 to $200 a month. A running coaching app such as RunMotion Coach uses algorithms to build and adapt your plan for around $10 a month on an annual subscription. Both can get you to the start line of a marathon in good shape. They differ in cost, speed of response, and the kind of attention you receive, and those differences matter more than most runners expect.

What is an online running coach?
An online running coach (also called a virtual or remote running coach) is a qualified person who designs your training without meeting you in person. You share your goals, race history and weekly schedule. The coach writes your sessions in a platform such as TrainingPeaks or Final Surge, you sync your watch, and the coach reviews your runs and adjusts the plan.
Communication usually happens by email, in-app messages, WhatsApp or a monthly call. Many coaches build the plan one week or one month at a time. The quality depends heavily on the individual coach, their qualifications and how many other athletes they look after.
What is a running coaching app?
A running coaching app generates your training plan automatically from your inputs and data. You enter your goal race, current level, available days and recent race times. The app calculates your training paces, schedules your sessions and changes the plan when your life or fitness changes.
Apps vary a lot. Some serve fixed templates with light adjustments. Others, including RunMotion Coach, TrainAsONE and Runna, adapt the plan as you train. RunMotion Coach is an adaptive training plan app that rebuilds your week whenever your schedule or fitness changes. Garmin Coach offers free adaptive plans for 5K, 10K and half marathon on compatible Garmin watches.
How much does an online running coach cost?
Prices for one-to-one online coaching are surprisingly similar across English-speaking markets once you convert currencies.
United States
Marathon Handbook reports that most online running coaches offering individualized plans with weekly support charge about $150 to $180 a month, within a wider range of about $30 to $300. McMillan Running offers coaching tiers at $99, $199 and $399 a month. RunToTheFinish charges $149 to $179 a month, and coaching directly with founder Amanda Brooks costs $275 a month.
Canada
Toronto’s BlackToe Running charges CAD $150 a month for private coaching with a three-month minimum. Skyline Run Coaching lists CAD $170 for basic coaching and CAD $190 for one-to-one coaching.
United Kingdom
JM Coaching offers Bronze, Silver and Gold packages at £60, £75 and £120 a month. We Run starts at £80 a month, plus £20 for a strength add-on. Most UK cost guides place online coaching between £50 and £200 a month.
Australia
Front Runner Sports charges between A$145 and A$220 per four weeks depending on the coach. Pulse Running in Melbourne charges A$180 a month with a three-month minimum, and Run Strong Online Coaching charges A$140 a month. Budget options exist too, such as Melbourne Pack at a flat A$70 a month.
Over a year, a mid-priced coach costs $1,200 to $2,400 USD. RunMotion Coach Premium costs $119.99 a year in the US.

Price
The gap is large. A year of RunMotion Coach Premium in the US costs less than a single month with most human coaches. In the UK, the annual plan (£89.99) is below the monthly price of JM Coaching’s Gold tier (£120).
Availability and responsiveness
Human coaches have lives, other clients and time zones. RunToTheFinish tells prospective clients its coaches are not on call around the clock and check in once per week. Many coaches on the Team RunRun marketplace promise responses within 24 hours. If your child is sick on Tuesday night and your interval session is on Wednesday, an app reorganises the week in seconds. A human coach might answer after the session was due.
Personalization and plan adaptation
A good human coach reads context an algorithm cannot see, such as stress at work or a hint of a niggle in your message. An app applies its rules the same way to every session and never forgets a detail from six weeks ago. RunMotion Coach recalculates your performance predictions from recent races and training sessions, so your paces move as your fitness changes. Read more about smarter pace predictions from your training.
Accountability
Accountability is where human coaches earn much of their fee. Knowing a real person will look at your week is a strong motivator for many runners. Apps rely on reminders, progress charts and in-app feedback, which work well for self-motivated runners. See why runners go Premium for the features that keep you on track.
Data use
Both options depend on your watch data. Apps process every run automatically. A human coach decides how closely to review each file, and that choice depends on their workload.
The roster problem: what happens when a coach has 50 athletes or more
The biggest hidden variable in online coaching is roster size. Boutique coaches cap their numbers deliberately; RunFitCoach limits Olympic Trials qualifier Johnny Crain to 20 athletes. Other coaches take on far more. One running coach writing on Substack notes that some coaches carry 30 to 50 or more clients, and says 10 to 12 was her own sweet spot.
The arithmetic is simple. A full-time coach working 40 hours a week has about 173 working hours a month. Spread across 50 athletes, that is under 3.5 hours per athlete per month before marketing, invoicing and admin. RunMotion’s analysis of the market suggests many online coaches spend only 1 to 2 hours per athlete per month on programming and communication.
At that level of time, a coach inevitably reuses templates and reviews some sessions only briefly. An algorithm does not get tired on a Sunday evening with 50 plans to update. It applies the same pace model and load progression to every runner, every week. For a recreational runner paying for a coach with a large roster, a well-built app can be more consistent and, in practical terms, more accurate. A coach with 15 athletes and time to study each one will usually out-coach any app.
What the research says about apps and human coaching
Direct trials comparing running apps with human running coaches are scarce, so the best evidence comes from neighbouring fields.
- A 2022 PLOS ONE study by Terblanche, Molyn, de Haan and Nilsson found that the AI chatbot “Coach Vici” was as effective as human coaches at helping participants reach personal development goals over 10 months.
- A 10-week randomized trial of 79 trained adults by Gavanda and colleagues (Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, November 2025) found resistance training adherence of 88.2% with in-person supervision, 81.2% with app-guided training and 52.2% with a self-directed PDF plan.
- In a Johns Hopkins diabetes prevention trial published in JAMA in 2025, 63.9% of participants completed the fully automated AI program against 50.3% in human-coached programs, with the same health outcome rate in both groups.
Adaptive apps clearly beat static plans, and they come close to human coaching for many everyday goals. Human coaching still leads when technique, supervision or complex judgement matters.
When a human coach is worth the money
A human coach is the better choice in several situations:
- You are an elite or sub-elite runner chasing marginal gains or championship qualification.
- You are returning from a significant injury and need someone working with your physiotherapist.
- You have a medical condition, are pregnant or returning postpartum, or have a history of disordered eating.
- Your life is so irregular that you need someone to talk through trade-offs, not just reschedule sessions.
- You only train consistently when a person is expecting to hear from you.
If you hire a coach, ask how many athletes they coach, whether coaching is their full-time job, and how quickly they reply.
Who a coaching app suits best
A coaching app is a strong fit if you are a beginner to advanced recreational runner with a clear goal such as a 10K, half marathon, marathon or trail race, and you want structure without paying $1,500 or more a year. It also suits runners whose schedules change week to week, because the plan reorganises itself instantly. Many runners move between the two over time, using an app for most seasons and a coach for a key goal race.
How RunMotion Coach works
RunMotion Coach is developed in the French Alps by Coaching 4.0, a team of elite runners, coaches and engineers. Head of R&D Guillaume Adam, a certified coach and 2:23 marathoner, co-authored the 2018 PLOS ONE paper “A minimal power model for human running performance” at the joint MIT-CNRS laboratory. That model underpins RunMotion’s pace calculations and its race time predictor, and the latest version also learns from 1.6 million training sessions.
When you set a goal, the app builds a plan around your level, schedule, preferred surfaces and watch data. Premium adds:
- a plan that adjusts to your fitness, with a weekly check-in on how you feel
- last-minute changes to sessions and training days
- training for several goals at once
- strength and conditioning designed with a physiotherapist, plus stretching
- cross-training such as cycling and swimming
- recovery, nutrition and mental preparation advice
- AI analysis of your sessions
- workout export to Garmin and Suunto watches and Google Calendar
Plans cover 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, trail and ultra-trail, triathlon from XS to XXL, and wellness or running for weight loss goals. RunMotion syncs with Apple Watch, Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Polar, Fitbit, Wahoo, Huawei Health and Strava, and you can follow the plan without a watch.
RunMotion Coach has been the official coach of UTMB since 2021 and is the official online coach of the UTMB World Series. The company reports that 88% of its users reach their goals. On the US App Store the app is rated 4.7 out of 5.
Premium costs $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US, £15.99 or £89.99 in the UK, CAD $29.99 or $159.99 in Canada, and A$29.99 or A$179.99 in Australia. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a free version is available.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an online running coach cost?
Most one-to-one online running coaches charge $100 to $200 USD a month in the US, about £50 to £200 in the UK, CAD $150 to $190 in Canada and A$140 to A$250 in Australia. RunMotion Coach Premium costs $119.99 a year or $19.99 a month in the US.
