Registration for the 2027 Paris Half Marathon is highly anticipated. Entries are usually available several months before race day, but this year’s schedule is expected to be different due to a change of organiser.

From 2027, Amaury Sport Organisation, or ASO, will no longer be responsible for the Paris Half Marathon. As with the Paris Marathon, the organisation of the event has been awarded to the Cadence consortium for the 2027 to 2030 editions. The Half Marathon and Marathon were included in the same concession awarded by the City of Paris.

When will registration open? What will the race date be? How much will a race bib cost, and which platform will you need to use to register? Here is everything currently known.

Updated July 20, 2026: public registration for the 2027 Paris Half Marathon is not officially open yet. Registration is expected to launch in autumn 2026, but the exact date has not yet been announced.

When will registration open for the 2027 Paris Half Marathon?

No exact registration opening date has been officially announced yet.

According to information published following the award of the new concession, race bibs for the 2027 Paris Half Marathon and Paris Marathon are expected to go on sale in autumn 2026. This later-than-usual opening is linked to the change of organiser and the rollout of a new registration system.

A September 2026 opening has been widely mentioned, but it should not yet be considered an official date.

This page will be updated as soon as the date, time and registration link have been confirmed.

What is the date of the 2027 Paris Half Marathon?

The Paris Half Marathon is traditionally held in early March.

The date of Sunday, March 7, 2027 already appears on some websites offering charity race bibs or sports travel packages. However, it still needs to be confirmed directly by the new organiser.

For now, it is best to keep the following in mind:

expected period: early March 2027;

provisional date: Sunday, March 7, 2027;

official confirmation: still pending.

The previous edition took place on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Who will organise the Paris Half Marathon in 2027?

The Paris Half Marathon and Paris Marathon were part of the same tender launched by the City of Paris.

The concession to organise both races from 2027 to 2030 was awarded to the Cadence consortium, made up of Havas Events, Keneo and OSE, formerly Avena Event.

Cadence will therefore take over from ASO for both major Paris running events. This change may lead to updates to the registration platform, runner services, aid stations and certain race bib options.

The distance will naturally remain that of an official half marathon, namely 21.0975 kilometres.

Will the HOKA Semi de Paris name be retained?

The race is currently called the HOKA Semi de Paris.

At this stage, the new organiser has not clearly confirmed whether this commercial name will remain for the 2027 edition. Some pages and initiatives linked to the previous edition already use the name “HOKA Semi de Paris 2027”, but this is not enough to determine the official name of the next edition with certainty.

Pending an official announcement, several names may be used to refer to the race:

Paris Half Marathon 2027;

2027 Paris Half Marathon;

HOKA Semi de Paris 2027;

Paris Half Marathon organised by Cadence.

In every case, this refers to Paris’s major 21.0975-kilometre race, held in early March.

How much will a race bib cost?

Prices for the 2027 Paris Half Marathon have not yet been published.

As in previous editions, prices may vary according to the purchase period and the number of places remaining. Several price tiers may be offered, with early entrants usually benefiting from the best rate.

We will need to wait for registration to open to find out:

the price of the first batch of race bibs;

the different pricing tiers;

platform fees;

options included with registration;

the cost of any cancellation insurance;

race bib transfer or resale terms.

For comparison, charity race bibs for the 2026 edition were offered with a reduced entry fee of €49, alongside a minimum fundraising target of €210. However, these figures do not indicate what prices will be in 2027.

Will registration still be on time to?

No. The registration platform will change because time to is ASO’s platform.

The link used for previous editions will therefore not be used for the 2027 event. The Cadence consortium will need to publish a new official address or direct participants to another registration provider.

The time to page that remains accessible relates to the previous organiser and notably displays information for the 2026 edition.

Before booking a race bib, always check that:

the link was published by the official organiser;

the 2027 edition is clearly stated;

the total price is displayed before payment;

the cancellation terms are available;

the website includes complete legal information.

High demand for registration can lead to misleading pages and fake sales links. No unofficial website should be considered trustworthy simply because it already claims to offer race bibs.

How many runners take part in the Paris Half Marathon?

The Paris Half Marathon is one of France’s most popular road races and is presented as the world’s largest half marathon.

Recent editions have welcomed around 45,000 to 50,000 runners. The official website for the 2026 edition mentions 50,000 participants in the heart of Paris.

This level of participation explains the strong demand when registration opens. The first price tiers can sell out quickly, even when all race bibs do not sell out immediately.

Is the 2027 Paris Half Marathon course known?

The official course for the 2027 edition has not yet been published.

The route may evolve with the change of organiser. For the 2026 edition, the start was on Boulevard Saint-Germain and the finish was at Place de la Bastille. The course mainly ran through eastern Paris and included a section in the Bois de Vincennes.

Cadence may retain the main features of the current route or introduce several adjustments. The final course will need to be measured and officially certified to meet the regulation distance.

The following details therefore remain to be confirmed:

the exact start location;

the finish location;

the streets used by the route;

the start times for the different corrals;

aid station locations;

the race time limit.

What changes are possible in 2027?

The project selected by the City of Paris includes several commitments shared by the Half Marathon and Marathon.

Cadence aims in particular to reduce waste, eliminate single-use plastic, prioritise aid stations without individual packaging and develop measures that make the race more accessible.

Some arrangements could therefore change as early as 2027:

using a soft flask, collapsible cup or personal water bottle;

redesigned aid stations;

an optional event T-shirt;

the option to decline certain post-race items;

adjusted prices for certain groups;

an increased focus on charity race bibs.

The exact rules will need to be included in the official 2027 Paris Half Marathon regulations. They should not be considered final before publication.

How can you prepare for registration opening?

To secure a race bib at the best price, it is advisable to prepare the following in advance:

your personal details;

an email address you can access;

a valid payment method;

your estimated half marathon finish time;

your preferred starting corral;

your running club details, where applicable.

The change of organiser may require you to create a new account. Login details used on time to may not allow you to access the future platform.

You will also need to check the medical requirements that apply in 2027, particularly the rules regarding the Health Prevention Pathway or sports licences.

You can already start training with RunMotion Coach, the official online coach of the Paris Half Marathon in 2025 and 2026, and find our half marathon training tips.

While waiting for the new organiser’s announcement, be wary of websites already claiming to sell public race bibs, or presenting a date, price or course as definitively confirmed.

Registration for the 2027 Paris Marathon is already raising plenty of questions. Usually opening shortly after the previous edition, entries are taking longer this time because of a major change in how the race will be organised.

From 2027, Amaury Sport Organisation, better known as ASO, will no longer organise the Paris Marathon. The City of Paris has awarded the 2027 to 2030 editions to a new consortium called Cadence.

So, when will registration open? How much will a race bib cost? Will runners need to create an account on a new platform? Here is what we know so far.

Updated July 20, 2026: registration for the 2027 Paris Marathon is not officially open yet. Entries are expected to launch in autumn 2026, but the organiser has not announced a specific date.

When will 2027 Paris Marathon registration open?

So far, no exact registration opening date has been published through an official channel.

However, several media reports indicate that race bib sales should begin in autumn 2026, most likely during September. This later-than-usual opening is mainly due to the change of organiser and the rollout of a new registration system.

For now, it is important to distinguish between two points:

September 2026 is currently the expected timeframe;

the precise opening day has not yet been officially announced.

This page will be updated as soon as the date, time and registration link have been confirmed.

What is the date of the 2027 Paris Marathon?

The date currently being discussed for the 2027 Paris Marathon is Sunday, April 11, 2027.

This date already appears on several specialist race calendars, although some note that final confirmation from the organiser is still pending. For now, it is best regarded as the event’s provisional date.

The 2027 edition should also mark the 50th anniversary of the Paris Marathon, whose first modern edition took place in 1976.

Why ASO will no longer organise the Paris Marathon

ASO had organised the Paris Marathon since 1998. Its contract ended with the 2026 edition, after being extended because of the consequences of the health crisis.

In 2025, the City of Paris launched a new competitive tender process to award the organisation of the Paris Marathon and Paris Half Marathon from 2027 to 2030.

Three candidates submitted bids:

Playground, partnered with Oconnection;

Cadence;

Amaury Sport Organisation.

According to City of Paris documents, the Cadence consortium received the highest overall score, with 9.7 out of 10. The operating contract was officially awarded to it by the Council of Paris in May 2026.

It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a change of operator following a public tender, rather than the disappearance or cancellation of the race.

Who is the new Paris Marathon organiser?

The new organiser is the Cadence consortium, made up of several event-industry specialists:

Havas Events, lead member of the consortium;

Keneo;

Avena Event, now known as OSE.

Cadence will organise the Paris Marathon and Paris Half Marathon for the four editions held between 2027 and 2030.

The proposal selected by the City includes improvements to the runner experience, better integration of the event into Paris neighbourhoods, inclusion measures and stronger environmental commitments.

The Paris Marathon is also changing its name

Another major change: from 2027, the event will be called the ASICS Marathon de Paris.

ASICS will replace Schneider Electric as the race’s title partner, making it the ASICS Marathon de Paris 2027. The Council of Paris approved this new naming agreement in July 2026. The partnership is set to cover the 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 editions.

It remains the same 42.195-kilometre marathon.

How much will a 2027 race bib cost?

Prices for the 2027 Paris Marathon have not yet been officially announced.

The entry fee may continue to increase across different registration waves, as it did in previous editions. However, there is currently no confirmation of:

the price of the first batch of race bibs;

the number of pricing tiers;

any registration platform fees;

which options will be included or charged separately;

the cancellation and race bib transfer policy.

However, the proposal selected by the City refers to a pricing policy designed to make the event more accessible. It includes a specific low, fixed-price entry for unemployed people, along with solidarity initiatives.

The exact amounts will need to be checked once the 2027 race regulations are published.

Which website will be used to register?

The official link to buy a 2027 race bib has not yet been announced.

With ASO stepping down, runners should not assume that registration will still go through the time to platform used for previous editions. Cadence may launch a new website, retain part of the existing ecosystem or select another ticketing provider.

Before making a payment, always check that:

the link comes from an official channel;

the organiser’s name is clearly displayed;

legal information is available;

the price and refund terms are shown before payment.

High demand for race bibs can lead to fake websites and misleading pages. Avoid links shared by unverified accounts and offers claiming to guarantee a race bib before the official opening.

What changes are planned for the 2027 edition?

The change of organiser should not affect the official 42.195-kilometre marathon distance, but several developments are being considered.

A route that could evolve

Cadence’s proposal aims to showcase different Paris neighbourhoods, as well as urban and architectural landmarks. The course could therefore be adjusted from one edition to the next, although the 2027 route has not yet been published.

An end to single-use plastic

Cadence has committed to eliminating single-use plastic. The project includes water fountains and aid stations designed for runners using their own hydration systems.

According to the proposal presented to the City, participants may need to carry their own soft flask, water bottle, collapsible cup or hydration pack. The final requirements will, however, be set out in the race regulations.

A potentially optional race T-shirt

The race T-shirt is expected to be offered as an optional extra. Runners may also be able to have a garment they already own customised.

The proposal also includes the option to voluntarily decline the finisher’s medal and receive a “Green Runner” distinction instead.

Redesigned aid stations

Solid food at aid stations is expected to prioritise local, seasonal products served without individual packaging. The stated aim is to significantly reduce waste generated by the event.

How to be ready on registration day

The Paris Marathon attracts tens of thousands of runners. The City reports more than 66,000 registered participants for the 2026 edition, suggesting exceptionally high demand for 2027.

While waiting for registration to open, prepare:

your full contact details;

an email address you can easily access;

your estimated marathon finish time;

a valid payment method;

your running club details, if applicable;

your preference regarding available options and insurance.

Do not rely on previous registration rules: the platform, prices, medical documentation and included services may change under the new organiser.

2027 Paris Marathon registration FAQ

Is registration for the 2027 Paris Marathon open?

No. As of July 20, 2026, general registration has not officially opened yet.

When will runners be able to buy a race bib?

Registration is expected to open in autumn 2026, probably in September. The exact date remains to be confirmed.

Has the 2027 Paris Marathon been cancelled?

No. The change of organiser does not mean the race has been cancelled. Cadence has been awarded the operating contract for the 2027 to 2030 editions.

Is ASO still organising the Paris Marathon?

ASO remains responsible for the 2026 edition, but will no longer organise the race from 2027 onwards.

Who is organising the Paris Marathon in 2027?

The 2027 Paris Marathon will be organised by the Cadence consortium, made up of Havas Events, Keneo and OSE, formerly Avena Event.

What will the race’s new name be?

From 2027, the race will be called the ASICS Marathon de Paris.

What is the date of the 2027 Paris Marathon?

The provisional date is Sunday, April 11, 2027. Direct confirmation from the organiser is still awaited.

How much will registration cost?

Prices for 2027 race bibs have not yet been published.

Will registration still be through time to?

No. The registration platform will change because time to is ASO’s platform. The link used for previous editions will not be used for the 2027 edition.

Key takeaways

The Paris Marathon is entering a new chapter in its history. ASO is making way for the Cadence consortium, ASICS is becoming the title partner, and several changes are expected to registration, pricing, the course and aid-station organisation.

Registration should open in autumn 2026. Until an official announcement is made, be wary of overly specific dates and websites claiming to already sell race bibs to the general public.

The Templiers Trail Festival is a must for any trail runner. It’s one of Europe’s biggest trail running events, drawing thousands of athletes from all over the world. It’s a unique chance to run one of the 13 races set in a stunning natural playground, while discovering or rediscovering the culture and gastronomy of Aveyron. If you live for trail running, or you’re simply craving a real challenge, mark your calendar for October 17 to 20, 2024.

Templiers Trail Festival, A legendary race

The Templiers Trail Festival is an iconic trail running event held every year since 1995 in Aveyron, above Millau, in the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park. Gilles Bertrand and Odile Baudrier, photographer and journalist, came up with the idea after reporting on American trail races like the Leadville Trail in Colorado or Western States in California. As a true trail running pioneer, it sits alongside other mythical events such as the 6000D in La Plagne, which has been around since 1990.

Proud of its heritage and breathtaking scenery, the Templiers courses will show you the region from a whole new angle. Between traditional farms and stone hamlets, ridgelines and iconic viewpoints, unique singletrack trails, and postcard-perfect villages, you’ll experience the Causses in a truly special way.

Races for every level

The organization offers no fewer than 13 races, from 7 km all the way up to 106 km, with more or less elevation depending on the challenge you want. In an exceptional setting, whether you’re a beginner runner or a seasoned trail athlete, there’s a race for you at the Templiers Trail Festival.

To get the most out of race day, we recommend preparing properly with a trail running training plan. As we say at RunMotion Coach: “All you have left to do is run”!

Endurance Trail

The Endurance Trail is the longest format at Templiers, with 106 km to cover and 4,580 m of elevation gain to conquer. Starting Friday, October 18, 2024 at 4:00 a.m. and finishing in Millau, this ultra trail blends technical terrain, endurance, and a truly majestic atmosphere.

You’ll get access to exclusive routes opened only for the Templiers Trail Festival. Singletrack is king on this course. But don’t worry, the first 20 kilometers are designed to stretch out the field, letting you settle into your own pace on wider paths and roads. Five aid stations are spread along the route, along with several water points.

More information about the Endurance Trail course.

Grand Trail des Templiers

This is the festival’s legendary race. On the menu: 80.6 km and 3,060 m of elevation gain. The field is capped at 2,350 bibs, so it’s smart to grab yours early. The start goes off on October 20, 2024 from 5:15 a.m. in Millau. A headlamp is strongly recommended, and actually mandatory. Watching more than 2,000 runners moving through the darkness, their headlamps dancing in waves, is unforgettable for runners and spectators alike.

Just like most Templiers races, singletrack dominates. The opening kilometers help you position yourself before hitting the first narrow “single” section. The finish is also in Millau, and you’ll hear cheers all along your journey.

More information about the Grand Trail des Templiers course.

Intégrale des Causses

Shorter than its two big sisters, the Intégrale des Causses still packs a serious punch with 66.3 km and 2,860 m of elevation gain. The start is on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 6:50 a.m. in the village of Peyreleau. The organizers provide a network of free shuttles to get there, but you need to reserve your spot. The finish is not in the same place, it’s in Millau. If you’re thinking of signing up for this Templiers race, don’t wait too long, it’s limited to 600 runners.

Boffi Fifty

The Boffi Fifty is the perfect race to test yourself before stepping up to a longer Templiers distance. With 48.5 km and 2,180 m of elevation gain, it’s demanding. With very tight cut-off times, a highly technical finish, and relentless terrain, this trail race requires excellent fitness and smart pacing. The start is in Millau on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 8:00 a.m., with the finish back in the same place.

More information about the Boffi Fifty course.

Marathon des Causses

36 km and 1,640 m of elevation gain await runners who toe the line for the Marathon des Causses. The start is on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 12:10 p.m. in two waves from Millau. The finish is in the same place. The route is well balanced overall, but full of traps. A true trail running adventure to level up your experience. The Marathon des Causses is part of the Templiers C.O.L.T. This is a series of four trail marathons brought together in a circuit symbolically named “COLT, the marathon-trail challenge that draws fast”. All are organized by the Templiers Trail Festival team.

Marathon du Larzac

35.5 km and 1,420 m of elevation gain, that’s what you should be ready for if you’re taking on the Marathon du Larzac. The start is in the hamlet of La Salvage on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 7:00 a.m. Shuttles will be set up from Millau, where the race finishes, by the Templiers organization. Remember to reserve your seat. The Marathon du Larzac is also part of the Templiers C.O.L.T.

More information about the Marathon du Larzac course.

Monna Lisa Trail

Created in 2012 and more approachable in distance, the Monna Lisa Trail is still one of the festival’s more technical races, adding a real dose of challenge to its 29.7 km route with 1,170 m of elevation gain. On Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 9:30 a.m., the race takes you from Millau on a stunning loop around the Causse Noir.

More information about the Monna Lisa course.

Dourbie Formi

The Dourbie Formi celebrates its first edition this year at the Templiers Trail Festival. With 24.6 km and 1,260 m of elevation gain, this new race is accessible thanks to its distance, and it starts in Millau, right in the heart of the Graufesenque archaeological site, on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. The finish is a few kilometers away in the same city after a beautiful loop through the Causses. Still, watch out for the technical descent at the end (1.1 km with 400 m of elevation loss).

More information about the Dourbie Formi course.

VO2 Trail

Fast, fun, and playful, the VO2 Trail course has its own personality. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, you’ll take on 17.7 km with 700 m of elevation gain. The originality of this race is its near-straight climb from Millau up to the Causse Noir plateau, followed by a more steady section across the plateau, then a strong descent down to the Tarn river before heading back to Millau. It’s a great way to truly test your fitness before moving up in distance at Templiers, or to chase a strong time, because the level is usually very high.

More information about the VO2 Trail course.

Troubadours

Even if the distance isn’t huge at 11.4 km compared with other Templiers races, the elevation is still no joke for a race this size: 540 m of elevation gain. A great way to torch your quads before winter and soak up the true Templiers spirit. Note that access is also open to hiking and Nordic walking. The start is on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. in Millau, with the finish in the same place.

More information about the Troubadours course.

La Templière

Created in 2004, this women-only race is the feel-good event of the Templiers Trail Festival. Its 7.3 km course with 290 m of elevation gain above the Tarn delivers an amazing atmosphere and magnificent views. Registration is open to everyone, including hikers. The start is on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 1:45 p.m. in Millau. The finish is in the same place.

More information about the La Templière course.

KD Trail and Kinder Trail

Yes, the Templiers Trail Festival also thinks about the younger runners. A chance to challenge themselves and absorb the unique race atmosphere from an early age. Three kids’ races will take place on the wide grassy plain of Graufesenque along the Tarn river, just outside Millau. A perfect opportunity to enjoy the Templiers races as a family.

The KD Trail, reserved exclusively for Cadets (boys and girls), meaning athletes born in 2007 or 2008, is a discovery trail race of 7.3 km with 290 m of elevation gain. The Kinder Trail is a 1.5 km loop, with the distance varying by category. Poussins (born in 2013 or 2014) and Benjamins (born in 2011 or 2012) run one lap. Minimes (born in 2009 or 2010) complete two laps.

Sign up for the Templiers Trail Festival and get ready

If you’re into trail running and ultra distances, you’ve probably already heard of this one of a kind race, Échappée Belle. Cutting straight through the wild Belledonne massif in the heart of the French Alps, this legendary event draws ultra trail runners from all over the world chasing a serious mountain challenge. Grab your headlamp, your poles and all your kit, brace your quads, we’re diving into the Échappée Belle races and why they’re a true gem of French trail running.

Échappée Belle, a truly unique challenge

With several high points pushing close to 3,000 meters above sea level, the Belledonne range, set in the Alps between Grenoble and Chambéry, is famous for its rugged, rocky, untamed peaks.

Right through its heart runs one of the most technical ultra trails in France, Échappée Belle. On the menu, four race formats:

Échappée Belle, the full crossing, with its iconic 149 km and 11,400 m of elevation gain (700 bibs)

The North Traverse, with 88 km and 6,570 m of elevation gain (600 bibs)

The Ridge Route, more approachable, with “only” 64 km and 4,700 m of elevation gain (600 bibs)

The Rocher Blanc Skyrace® with 21 km and 2,000 m of elevation gain (250 bibs)

Each course delivers a different experience, and a whole lot of rocks. The organization also makes sure you discover the region, its people and its heritage along the way, but yes, mostly rocks.

Another key goal is to reduce the race’s environmental impact on the massif. Échappée Belle takes sensitive and protected areas into account, working closely with local stakeholders and rolling out concrete actions on the ground.

That’s why entries are capped for each format, so don’t wait too long to register.

Échappée Belle’s reputation is not only about how technical and tough it is. Plenty of world class ultra trail runners have come to measure themselves against the challenge this race delivers.

The current men’s record on the full crossing is held by François d’Haene (2019) in 23:55, multiple winner of UTMB and the Grand Raid de La Réunion. The women’s record is held by Emilie Lecomte (2015) in 30:09, winner of La Diagonale des Fous, Tor des Géants, and more.

A race like no other

Highly technical trails

Échappée Belle drops you into raw, protected wilderness. Expect technical trails, rocky sections and steep descents. Solid mountain trail running experience, and even high mountain know how, is essential to move efficiently and safely across this demanding terrain.

Serious elevation gain

Get your legs ready, because Échappée Belle comes with a lot of climbing, and a lot of descending too. The courses are packed with steep ascents and high passes, putting your endurance and muscular resilience to the test. Managing your effort on the climbs is crucial if you want to hold a steady pace and avoid blowing up too early. You stay in the mountains for the entire race, including 40 consecutive kilometers above 2,000 m altitude on the full crossing.

Self-sufficiency in the mountains

Échappée Belle is a race where you can feel truly alone, and no, cairns are not people. Sometimes for very long stretches, which means you’ll need to manage your nutrition, hydration and gear throughout the event. Make sure you’re equipped for fast changing mountain conditions and carry enough reserves to stay strong to the finish.

Breathtaking scenery

Échappée Belle is much more than a race, it’s a stunning visual adventure. One moment you’re on a summit with huge 360° views, the next you’re picking your way through scree fields, then you’re down in valleys beside around 30 high altitude lakes lining the route. These landscapes are the reward for every hard earned meter. Take a second to soak it all in, and let that long distance feeling of freedom and awe do its work.

The Échappée Belle races

The full crossing (L’intégrale)

With 149 km and 11,400 m of elevation gain, with almost as much elevation loss, the full crossing of Échappée Belle takes you across the entire Belledonne massif. This is a committed mountain ultra, and the challenge is massive. You can rely on volunteers all along the course. They’ll help guide you and keep you moving, physically and mentally. The full crossing is 90% singletrack, 8% forest roads and only 2% paved road.

The start is split into three waves on Friday from 5:00 to 6:00 a.m. from Domaine de Vizille. You must reach Aiguebelle by Sunday at noon at the latest (54 hours maximum). The shuttle from the finish back to the start is included in the bib price.

The North Traverse (La Traversée Nord)

88 km and 6,500 m of elevation gain, plus 7,300 m of descent, that’s the challenge waiting for runners on the North Traverse of Échappée Belle. A gorgeous sawtooth profile, big climbs, technical descents, you could almost sum it up like that. But the difficulty is very real here too, even with the shorter distance. For a large part of the route, you’re on the same terrain as the final section of the full crossing.

The start is in Fond-de-France on Saturday between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. The finish is in Aiguebelle, open until Sunday at noon (30 hours maximum). The shuttle from the finish back to the start is included in the bib price.

The Ridge Route (Le Parcours des Crêtes)

The Ridge Route is the most accessible trail format at Échappée Belle. Careful though, it’s still 64 km with 4,700 m of elevation gain. Even if the trails are generally easier to access than on the two ultras, they remain technical, especially between Col de Claran and Fontaine Noire. For a big part of the race, you’re treated to an incredible panorama over the Alps, all the way to Mont Blanc, and of course, plenty of rocks.

The course runs between Allevard and Aiguebelle, with a Saturday morning start between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. and a deadline of Sunday at noon (27 hours maximum). The shuttle from the finish back to the start is included in the bib price.

The Rocher Blanc Skyrace®

A beautiful 21 km loop with 2,000 m of elevation gain, starting from Fond-de-France for a technical climb through scree and mountain trails up to Rocher Blanc (2,928 m), via Sept Laux. You finish with a long, rough, rocky descent dropping 2,000 m, yes, rocks again.

Start time is 9:30 a.m. in Fond-de-France on Friday.

Get ready and sign up for Échappée Belle

You’ve got it, Échappée Belle is an unforgettable adventure that will push you beyond your limits in a truly exceptional setting. Don’t underestimate how important proper training is for these very demanding trail and ultra trail races. With RunMotion Coach, you get access to a personalized trail running training plan that takes into account your schedule, your training terrain, your level and your goals.

The big plus is that you can add S&C sessions and cycling workouts, both crucial to build strength, durability and performance across the entire race. On top of that, the app also provides nutrition tips, race strategy advice, and includes sophrology and mental preparation. Perfect for getting ready for Échappée Belle.

Expect intense moments, expect to dig deep, and expect memories that will stick with you for a long time, like the rocks under your soles.

Famous for its bold architecture and for the Chicago Bulls era with Michael Jordan, Chicago is also home to a truly legendary race. The Chicago Marathon is one of the 6 World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, London, Berlin, Boston, and New York. Known as one of the flattest and fastest marathons in the world, with an electric, welcoming vibe, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is packed with stories, surprises, and big performance moments. Every year, more than 45,000 runners toe the line.

Discovering the Chicago Marathon

A bit of history

The first edition of the Chicago Marathon took place in 1905, with 15 runners on the starting line and only 7 making it to the finish. The race was held annually until 1920, when it was discontinued. It was not until 1977 that the marathon was revived. That first modern edition was called the Mayor Daley Marathon, in honor of former Chicago mayor Richard Daley.

As sponsors came on board, the Chicago Marathon started to grow, especially in prize money. In 1984, total prizes hit $250,000, which was $50,000 more than the New York City Marathon. Little by little, the event evolved from a regional road race into a top-tier international marathon.

A marathon made for record-breaking

The Chicago Marathon has a reputation as one of the fastest marathons on the planet. Its flat course is perfect for running a big PR and chasing an aggressive finish time.

Over the years, countless records have been set at the Chicago Marathon. The course has produced 4 world records, including the 2019 mark still held by Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei in 2:14:04. Many national records have also fallen on this iconic marathon route.

It’s also why so many runners come here to take a shot at their personal best. It’s the perfect reason to show up well-prepared and go after yours.

A spectacular course

After the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the city rose from the ashes and became a cradle of modern architecture. Its forward-thinking buildings, cultural mix, and legendary landmarks are still incredible to see.

The Chicago Marathon taps into that diversity, crossing 29 different neighborhoods and passing dozens of historic sites. The race starts in the heart of Grant Park and takes you along the shores of the world-famous Lake Michigan.

A warm, high-energy atmosphere

The vibe at the Chicago Marathon is incredibly warm and welcoming. Chicagoans are known for their hospitality, and you feel it in the energy they bring to race day.

Along the course, more than a million spectators line the streets to cheer you on. Bands and DJs set up on stages throughout the route add a festive edge that keeps your motivation high and your pacing on track.

What really makes the Chicago Marathon special, though, is the sense of camaraderie between runners. Participants come from every background, age group, and country, but everyone shares the same goal, to reach the finish line. Runners encourage each other, swap stories, and share training tips, creating a true endurance community around the event.

In the final stretch and beyond, volunteers welcome you in, helping you recover, refuel, and relax after the effort. The atmosphere feels like one big celebration, where athletes honor their commitment and their mental toughness, no matter the finish time.

How to register for the Chicago Marathon

Getting into the Chicago Marathon is a challenge in itself. To register, you need to plan months, sometimes even years ahead if you have to go through the lottery.

Registration is done directly on the official Bank of America Chicago Marathon website.

If you want to secure a guaranteed entry, you need a qualifying time at a strong regional level, 3:05 for men or 3:35 for women under 35. A half marathon time is not accepted.

If you do not meet these standards, or if you have fewer than 5 Chicago Marathon finishes, you will enter the main lottery for a chance to be selected.

If you really want to run, there are also charity entries, where you earn a bib by raising $1,500 for a nonprofit.

But the most reliable option if you do not have the required qualifying time is to book through a Chicago Marathon-authorized travel agency. We recommend the Contrastes Running travel agency, a France-based agency and official reseller for the Chicago Marathon. It’s ideal if you want to run Chicago for a special occasion, like a birthday, or to complete your World Marathon Majors journey. The package includes your Chicago Marathon bib, flights, and accommodation.

If you want to train smart for this extraordinary event or qualify directly for this marathon, the RunMotion Coach Running digital coach is here for you!

Since the 2000s, tons of marathons have popped up worldwide. Race organizers keep raising the bar with routes that are more breathtaking and more original every year. Here is our ranking of the most beautiful and most unusual marathons to add to your endurance running bucket list.

The most beautiful marathons

Here is our selection of the most beautiful marathons in the world. Every race has its own magic, and picking just a few was almost as hard as running 26.2 miles Their common point: a 42.195 km course, aka 26.2 miles!

The Paris Marathon

The Paris Marathon is, without a doubt, the most famous marathon in France. It attracts elite and international runners, like Kenenisa Bekele in 2014 (2:05:02). Even if the course is not the fastest in the world, you get to run past iconic landmarks that let you mix marathon performance with a little sightseeing. The Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde, and the Seine riverbanks are all on your race-day route

The Lewa Safari Marathon, Kenya

Runners get the rare chance to race a half marathon or full marathon inside the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Since its creation in 2000, participants have been able to cross the wild plains of East Africa while spotting lions, elephants, and cheetahs. You could almost say you are running with them, although the cheetah would finish your marathon twice as fast This event has raised more than $7.5 million to support projects in Kenya.

Midnight Sun Marathon, Norway

In Tromsø, up in Scandinavia, the sun never sets from May 18 to July 26. That unique natural phenomenon inspired a very special race, the Midnight Sun Marathon. Every year, more than 1,000 runners from 50 countries get the opportunity to run under the midnight sun and, with a bit of luck, catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights

The start is at 8:30 p.m., in full daylight, and whatever your finish time, you will make it back before night falls

Two Oceans Marathon, South Africa

Created in 1970, it is often considered one of the most beautiful races on the planet. Even though, technically, it is not a true marathon because the total distance is 56 km, more of a challenging ultramarathon. At the southern tip of Africa in Cape Town, runners get incredible views of the Indian Ocean on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. It is a tough course, but the scenery is absolutely worth the effort.

Jungfrau Marathon, Switzerland

The most beautiful races are often the toughest. Yes, you have to earn those views The Jungfrau Marathon in Switzerland combines both. To give you a sense of the difficulty, you start at 560 m above sea level and finish your 42.195 km at 2,000 m. In other words, you need solid marathon training and smart pacing. The reward is huge though, because at that altitude you get a panoramic mountain view that is pure motivation.

Finishers enjoy a spectacular view of the Swiss Alps peaks.

The most unusual marathons

In recent years, organizers have really outdone themselves with original, quirky marathon events. Expect challenge, food, music, and plenty more. Your job is to pick the one that fits you best, then prepare like a pro with the right endurance training plan! PS: our app can also coach you for the most unusual marathons

The Médoc Marathon, France

All about good vibes and French food culture, this marathon is sometimes called the longest in the world, thanks to the generous breaks you can take along the way. Right in the middle of the vineyards, runners face constant temptation to stop at the roughly twenty stations on the course for a little apéro . You will find local specialties from Médoc, like oysters, cheese, and steak. Costumes are even encouraged.

As you have probably guessed, the goal is not to set a PR, it is to have an unforgettable time and test the most food-loving runners among us.

Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, Nepal

The Everest Marathon is one of the most extreme races on Earth. Held in tribute to the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Everest, Tenzing Norgay’s grandson joined the start of the adventure with around a hundred runners in 2003. Athletes are invited three weeks early to acclimatize to altitude. Winners are most often Nepali, so good luck to any Western runner who dares to take it on

The Great Wall of China Marathon

Since 1999, the Great Wall of China has hosted a marathon and a half marathon, giving 2,500 participants the chance to run several kilometers on the Wall itself. With more than 5,164 steps, you can bet this course feels a lot like trail running. Medical staff are stationed at key points to help anyone in trouble. Runners have 8 hours to finish, compared to the usual 6-hour cut-off at many road marathons. The event is famous for welcoming athletes from more than 50 countries, aged from 10 to 85.

It is a spectacular route that blends history with pure running passion.

The Reggae Marathon, Jamaica

A marathon with one clear mission: party vibes. “Come for run, stay for fun”. The slogan says it all. It takes place in Jamaica on the country’s stunning beaches every first Sunday of December. A live percussion band plays, and a line of flaming torches lights up the start area on Negril Beach.

All along the course, reggae groups play, including the greatest hits of Bob Marley, born in Jamaica and a true icon of the genre. After the finish line, marathoners can keep the celebration going while soaking up the island’s Caribbean landscapes.

Las Vegas Marathon, United States

A race that keeps evolving, this “marathon of lights” has been run at night since 2011. That change turned it into the biggest night race in the world, with more than 50,000 bibs each year. It is an original urban course in a larger-than-life city, right in the middle of the desert. Runners cruise down Las Vegas Boulevard past some of the city’s most legendary hotels. Police officers on Harleys manage traffic.

Want to spice up your runner’s life? Here’s a handpicked list of the most unusual races out there. Have you ever done a truly weird race? Which one would you love to try?

Most animal-powered race: The Man VS Horse Marathon

Tired of winning every race you enter? The Man VS Horse Marathon might finally give you a rival worthy of your endurance and grit, a horse.

In 1980, like any self-respecting Welshman, Gordon Green met two friends at a pub. One of them claimed that over long distance, a human could be just as fast as a horse. Gordon Green decided to put that theory to the test and launched the very first race.

Over a distance of 22 miles (35 kilometres), around 500 runners go head-to-head with roughly 50 horses. The course is rugged, and the weather is often unpredictable, perfect conditions to test real endurance performance.

It took 25 editions before the first man finally beat the horse. Huw Lobb won the promised £25,000 prize, the pot increasing by £1,000 each year. Florian Holzinger became the second man to win the challenge three years later. Will you be the third?

Most romantic (or not…): Wife carrying

You’ve always dreamed of racing with your other half? Wife carrying is your event. The goal is simple, carry your girlfriend or wife as fast as possible over an obstacle course. And if you’re determined, you can swap roles too

Every year, a World Championship is held in Finland. The winning couple takes home the woman’s weight in beer.

The course is about 300 metres long and includes two obstacles and a river crossing. The minimum required weight is 49 kg, otherwise the woman is weighted to reach it. Also worth knowing, wearing a bike helmet is mandatory.

Most festive race: the Médoc and Beaujolais marathons

Drink or run, do you really have to choose? Not at the Médoc and Beaujolais marathons. The route winds through French vineyards, a dream course for wine lovers who also happen to be marathon runners. Each château you pass offers tasting stations as part of the aid stops. Many runners show up in costume for these friendly, high-energy events that draw several thousand marathoners and plenty of unforgettable finish-line stories.

The Médoc Marathon takes place in September, and the Beaujolais Marathon in November.

Most hopped-up race: The Beer Mile

Want to combine your love of running and beer in one race? The Beer Mile is made for you. The concept is simple, four track laps (1,609 m to be exact) and four beers to drink as fast as possible.

Even if you’ve never beaten your buddy in a race, you might actually have a shot in this one

There are two versions. The Beer Mile, American-style, uses 355 ml bottles, and the Chunder Mile, British-style, uses 568 ml pints, always bigger. In the first, you’ll get a penalty lap if you throw up during the race, while it’s allowed in the second. In both cases, the beer must be at least 5.0% alcohol.

The Beer Mile World Classic brings together hundreds of runners every year, in a different location each time.

The cheesiest race: Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake

In England, this event takes place on Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester. The goal is to catch a cheese, a seven-pound Double Gloucester, launched from the top of the hill. In reality, the cheese can hit 100 km/h, and the winner is simply the first person to cross the finish line (about 200 metres) at the bottom.

Every year, plenty of runners end up in hospital with sprained ankles or even fractures. This race is a true tradition and is said to have existed for more than 200 years.

Photo credit: Reway2007

The one where you get caught: Wings for Life World Run

Run until a car catches you, that’s the challenge behind the Wings for Life World Run. Held simultaneously in around 30 countries, tens of thousands of runners push their endurance for as long as possible, raising funds for spinal cord injury research.

The concept is brilliant, a Catcher Car starts 30 minutes after the race begins at 15 km/h, then gradually speeds up. Your race ends the moment the car catches you. The current record stands at 92.14 kilometres. It’s also now possible to race against a virtual Catcher Car using the dedicated Wings for Life mobile app.

Most monumental race: The Eiffel Tower Vertical Race

Climb 1,665 steps in the most famous monument in Paris, that’s the challenge. It adds up to 276 metres of positive elevation gain, and only a little over a hundred lucky runners are selected each year.

The top men need a bit under 8 minutes, and the top women under 10 minutes, to earn one of the best panoramic views over the French capital.

More than 250 tower runs, these stair-climbing races, are now organised worldwide. For the most durable endurance athletes, the Ultra Trail de Montmartre challenges you to climb the hill 271 times, that’s 10,000 m of elevation gain and 60,000 steps.

Most brutal race: The Barkley

The Barkley Marathons is one of the most demanding ultra-trail events on Earth, with only about 2% finishers. Laz, the race founder, got the idea after a prisoner escaped from the Frozen Head State Penitentiary. After 55 hours on the run, the fugitive had only covered a few kilometres and got lost. Laz figured he could have run at least 100 miles in that time.

The challenge, cover 100 miles (five loops of 20 miles each) in under 60 hours. Every year, the course changes and it isn’t marked. Participants must tear out pages from books placed along each loop to prove they reached the checkpoints.

In 2017, Gary Collins nearly joined the tiny club of finishers by completing all five loops in 60 hours and 6 seconds.

In France, the Chartreuse Terminorum follows the same spirit, 300 km and 25 km of elevation gain to complete in under 80 hours. Consider yourself warned.

Scariest race: Run for Your Lives

In the United States, Run For Your Lives is an obstacle race where zombies are part of the course. This survival-style event has become a hit, with actors that look terrifyingly real. With that, your heart rate might spike to 200.

In France, the Zombie Run has arrived in Paris and Lyon.

Today, the SaintéLyon is one of the must-do winter trail races, run deep in the night between Saint-Étienne and Lyon. Nearly 20,000 runners line up across 7 different formats (including 7,000 runners on the flagship 82 km distance). There is even the Lyon-Sainté-Lyon now, which steps into the ultra trail category.

SaintéLyon: born as a night raid

Back in 1951, a group of cycling tourers wanted to stay fit through winter. They decided to connect Lyon to Saint-Étienne via the GR7 long-distance trail. That is how the Asics SaintéLyon was born, a 66 km night raid. Worth noting, the start alternates each year, one year in Lyon, the next in Saint-Étienne.

Growing more popular every season, the event became a timed power-walk race. It was only in the 1970s that competitors were allowed to run.

The race took off fast, with the number of participants rising year after year. The 1990 edition had to be shortened to Sainte-Catherine due to the weather, and the snow!

Today, it is safe to say this race has become a true legend.

The unique atmosphere of this night-time event

With a midnight старт, watching the race feels like a real festival of headlamps, a glowing ribbon winding through the Monts du Lyonnais. The course is not overly technical, which makes it a great introduction to long-distance trail running.

Just make sure you are trained to run in the cold and the dark so you can perform and actually enjoy night racing. You cannot repeat it enough, pace yourself. The final part of the race can feel tough after hours in freezing temperatures and darkness.

Winter conditions can make the race seriously challenging. Snow and mud on the route are far from rare!

Asics SaintéLyon race formats: something for every trail runner

There are multiple courses to suit as many trail runners as possible at this endurance event. Which distance will you pin a bib on for?

The LyonSaintéLyon: 164 km. Because connecting Saint-Étienne to Lyon was not enough for some ultra trail runners, you might as well do the round trip

The SaintéLyon 82 km solo. This is the flagship distance, with more than 7,000 participants in 2017. You can also race it as a relay, with 3 options: the main route split into 2, 3, or 4 legs.

The SaintExpress 45 km. A more accessible option for trail runners. The start is in Sainte-Catherine.

The SaintéSprint 24 km. A perfect format to get a taste of the event’s atmosphere.

The Saintétic 13 km. An ideal distance for beginner trail runners to jump into their first night trail race.

As for me, I won the SaintéSprint in 2018! I loved the vibe and the experience of running by headlamp on the trails between Soucieu-en-Jarrest and Lyon.

See you in Lyon in late November

The trail running expo takes place that weekend in the heart of Halle Tony Garnier, the finish venue for the main race. With 4,000 m² of exhibition space and more than 120 exhibitors, it is a key end-of-season meetup for trail and running pros and enthusiasts alike.

Be there a little before midnight for the various race starts. Will you manage to run in Lyon before the first light of day?

Training plan for the SaintéLyon

If you are taking part in one of the SaintéLyon races too, download the RunMotion Coach app to be ready for this trail running goal with a personalized trail training plan tailored to your race.

You will get a program adapted to your training terrain (trails, hills, city, treadmill, etc.) and access to nutrition tips. Because when it is cold and you are racing at night, dialing in your race fueling strategy matters just as much as your fitness.

Happy training!

There are tons of races in Paris, something for every kind of runner. Each event has its own vibe and a special kind of magic. So we didn’t try to rank them. Instead, we’re sharing them in calendar order, from March through December. Enjoy your training, and have an amazing race season

The Paris Half Marathon, the perfect way to kick off race season in Paris

The Paris Half Marathon puts the spotlight on eastern Paris, with both the start and finish in the Bois de Vincennes. The course follows the Seine riverbanks before turning back toward Vincennes near Île de la Cité.

More than 40,000 runners line up at the start of this fast half marathon in early March, whether they’re chasing a personal best or simply aiming to earn that finisher medal.

EcoTrail Paris Île-de-France

There’s something for everyone at the EcoTrail Paris Île-de-France. Distances include 18, 30, 45, and 80 kilometers. Every finish line is set at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, with a special bonus for the 80 km runners. They get the rare privilege of finishing on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower.

The elevation gain is no joke, around 1,500 m for the 80 km. So who said the Paris region was flat? EcoTrail Paris takes place in mid-March. As a prologue, the Eiffel Tower Vertical, 1,665 steps to climb, happens on Thursday.

Paris Marathon: the iconic race in Paris

The Paris Marathon is the capital’s biggest running event, with nearly 55,000 runners. It’s the number one goal for thousands of athletes. And the course is simply spectacular. From the Champs-Élysées start to the finish in the Bois de Boulogne, with a pass through the Bois de Vincennes, you run past Paris’s most famous landmarks. It’s the ultimate symbol of racing in Paris.

The Paris Marathon takes place in early April, one week before the Boston Marathon and two weeks before the London Marathon.

Oxy’Trail in Paris, Marne Valley

Since 2013, Oxy’Trail Paris, Marne Valley has been on the trail running calendar. In just a few years, it’s clearly earned its spot in the trail world. With 6,500 participants and more than 800 volunteers on the event, Oxy’Trail ranks as the 2nd biggest trail race in Île-de-France and sits in the top 10 trail races in France.

The Oxy’Trail stands out for how accessible it is. Three distances are on the program, 5 km, 11 km, and 23 km, plus kids’ races. That’s the charm of this event, discovering trail running and the natural gems of Paris, Marne Valley in a festive, supportive atmosphere.

La Parisienne, the 100% women’s race

La Parisienne is one of the Paris races reserved for women. The route looks like a postcard, starting at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and finishing on the Champ de Mars, after passing part of the Champs-Élysées and the Alexandre III Bridge.

The atmosphere is guaranteed, with around thirty music groups spread along the 7 km course. La Parisienne takes place in early September and brings together nearly 30,000 runners.

The Grande Classique Paris-Versailles

Paris-Versailles, also known as the Grande Classique, is one of the oldest races around Paris, first held in 1976. Finishing at the Palace of Versailles is pure magic. After a start near the Eiffel Tower, the route stays flat along the Seine. The big challenge is the Côte des Gardes, a 2 km climb that hits 9% in places.

This 16 km classic takes place in mid-September, with about 25,000 runners taking part.

Odysséa, the race against breast cancer

Odysséa is a race dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. More than a dozen events take place throughout the year across France, raising over one million euros for the cause. Odysséa Paris offers 5 km and 10 km distances in the heart of the Vincennes racecourse. The event averages 40,000 runners, a true community celebration. This race takes place in early October.

The 20 km of Paris

The 20 km of Paris is one of the most popular races in the city. It’s loved for its big, inclusive energy, and also for its seriously competitive elite field. The winner often needs under an hour to cover the distance.

Western Paris takes center stage with the Bois de Boulogne and the Seine riverbanks. The start and finish are set right at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

The 20 km of Paris takes place in mid-October and brings together around 30,000 runners.

The Paris Ekiden, when running becomes a team sport

The Ekiden is a marathon relay for a team of six runners, split like this: 5, 10, 5, 10, 5, and 7.195 km, covering the official marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers.

This event brings together just over a thousand teams along the Seine riverbanks. The Paris Ekiden is the go-to race for companies and clubs that want to build team spirit and create strong bonds among colleagues or members.

Organized by the French Athletics Federation in early November, every relay handoff takes place right across from the Eiffel Tower. The finish is at the famous Stade Emile Anthoine, the track almost at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Crédit photo : Photorunning

The Cross du Figaro

The Cross du Figaro was a world-famous cross-country race from 1961 to 2000, held in the Bois de Boulogne. The event returned in 2013 and now takes place at Parc de Saint-Cloud. This “cross-country” is closer to a nature run, with varied terrain from dirt paths and grass to paved roads. There’s something for everyone, with 5, 10, 15, and 20 km options.

The Cross du Figaro takes place on the last weekend of November, with part of the profits donated to the Téléthon.

The Issy-les-Moulineaux Christmas Corrida

The Christmas Corrida 10K attracts some very strong runners, and the win often goes in under 30 minutes. Then there’s the Santa costume race, where thousands of runners show up dressed head-to-toe in red, complete with beards.

Held in mid-December in Issy-les-Moulineaux, the Christmas Corrida is a great chance to chase a fast 10K time. Or just have fun over 5K or 10K in costume. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the Paris race calendar.

Around the same time, the Houilles corrida also offers an ultra-fast 10K.

Want to be ready for your next race? RunMotion Coach, the digital coach, is here for you!
From August 23 to 29, 2021, thousands of runners headed to Chamonix. For one week, the trail running capital of Haute-Savoie in the French Alps turned into the stage for a fierce showdown between the best trail runners on the planet. More than 300 runners trusted RunMotion Coach to prepare for this goal!

If the UTMB® brings together so many passionate runners, it’s because it’s a one-of-a-kind event, and we’re going to tell you why.

UTMB®: An international race on every level

Kilian Jornet, François d’Haene, Pau Capell, Courtney Dauwalter, the best trail runners in the world all meet in Chamonix for UTMB®. The 2021 edition delivered a truly elite field, with French runner François d’Haene taking the win for the 4th time.

If the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc is the most anticipated race of the year, it’s also one of the most watched. This year, organizers made it possible to follow the races live, including real-time coverage filmed from electric bikes. With nearly 100 different nations represented, UTMB® brings the whole world to Chamonix for one shared mission, to live and breathe trail running for a full week.

UTMB® Mont-Blanc: 7 days, 7 races

For one week, Chamonix becomes the beating heart of the event. It’s where you leave loved ones behind to find yourself alone on the trails around Mont Blanc. It’s also where you raise your arms and shout with joy at the finish. In 2003, trail fans discovered UTMB® for the first time. That inaugural edition had 711 runners on the start line, but only 67 made it to the finish. The race was defined by epic mountain weather, with rain, hail, and cold.

With demand exploding, the organizers created additional races that take place alongside UTMB®. The most recent is the MCC® (Martigny-Combe-Chamonix, 40 km), launched in 2018. Three years later, the event features 7 races ranging from 15 to 300 km, and that’s a big reason why UTMB® remains one of the most anticipated trail and ultra endurance events in the sport.

Mont Blanc as the backdrop

If Chamonix has become the trail running capital, UTMB® is a huge part of the reason. From France to Switzerland, via Italy, runners take on breathtaking mountain trails with one massive landmark guiding the way, Mont Blanc. At 4,810 m, it’s hard not to lock eyes with it at least once.

The different UTMB Mont-Blanc® races cross high mountain passes and iconic trails in a unique setting around Mont Blanc. The finish-line atmosphere in Chamonix is often described as spectacular, and it plays a major role in the event’s global reputation. On top of that, the organization is widely recognized as exceptional.

UTMB® is a tough race

UTMB®, the flagship race, 170 km

Even if UTMB® isn’t the hardest ultra out there, it’s still a serious monument in ultra trail running. With 170 km (about 105 miles) and nearly 10,000 m of elevation gain, UTMB® is famous for its brutal, highly mountainous course. The race is marked by countless DNFs, among amateurs and pros alike.

The event always takes place in late August. Weather conditions can be amazing or absolutely savage. Intense heat, then an icy night, ultra-trail runners who take on this challenge need to be ready for anything.

UTMB®: how to prepare for it?

Let’s be honest, to finish a race like UTMB® (170 km and 10,000 m of elevation gain), you need a solid and consistent running base. For an amateur runner, finishing UTMB® usually means at least 30 hours in the mountains. Over a race that long, everything matters, nutrition, recovery, hydration, pacing strategy, and sometimes even sleep management. It’s pure endurance performance.

If you want to line up for one of the races, you need to factor all of this in. Here are a few tips to prepare for a UTMB® race:

Bien choisir ses bâtonsChoose the right poles and learn how to run with them

Plan and test your race nutrition well before race day (bars, gels, sports drinks)

Follow a training plan tailored to your goal

Choose the right gear (shoes, pack, clothing)

Get used to altitude

Learn how to descend efficiently

The Deauville International Marathon is fast becoming one of France’s must-run marathons. Launched in 2019, it hosted the French Marathon Championships in 2022 for its third edition. Set on the Normandy coastline, the Deauville Marathon delivers a charming course that blends sea views with the region’s lush green countryside.

It attracts runners of every level looking for a late-autumn marathon with a great vibe. A 5K, 10K, half marathon, and relay races round out the weekend’s race options. The 2023 edition takes place on November 18 and 19.

The charm of Deauville

Deauville is famous as a seaside resort, with its iconic grand villas, upscale venues, luxury hotels and casinos, plus long stretches of soft sandy beach. But above all, Deauville is known for the legendary Les Planches, the wooden boardwalk lined with the names of film stars who gather during the Deauville American Film Festival. It’s right here on Les Planches, the long beachside promenade, that you’ll cross the finish line of the Deauville International Marathon.

The Deauville International Marathon courses fit perfectly into this exceptional setting, between the resort town and Normandy landscapes. All races are officially certified, and both the marathon and half marathon are now on the World Athletics calendar.

The Deauville Marathon

To take on the 42.195 km challenge of the Deauville Marathon, you’ll complete two 21 km loops. At first glance that might sound a bit repetitive, but the route is enjoyable, and the first lap gives you a clear read on what to expect for lap two.

That’s actually a real advantage for marathon pacing and race strategy, you can anticipate the tougher moments, and know exactly when you’ll be able to push the pace again.

As you head inland, runners pass alongside the racecourse and then move through the peaceful Normandy countryside. The Deauville Marathon also rolls through nearby towns and villages like Touques, Saint-Arnoult, and Tourgeville, where you’ll find several aid stations. There’s a gentle uphill drag at km 8 (and again at km 29 on the second loop), then a downhill section where you can open up your stride and get back into rhythm.

You’ll reconnect with the seafront from km 19, and the half marathon mark is just steps from Les Planches de Deauville. Then it’s time to go again for lap two. The kilometers tick by, familiar landmarks from the first loop come back into view, and you can feel the finish getting closer.

At km 40, you know the sea and the Deauville Marathon finish are near. Just 500 meters later, you can start enjoying the final 1.5 km that runs along the beach. The finish on Les Planches de Deauville is truly spectacular.

The 5K, 10K and Half Marathon

The Deauville International Marathon weekend is open to runners of all abilities, with races that suit beginners and experienced athletes alike. The half marathon lets you taste the marathon course and is a perfect stepping stone if you dream of running a full marathon one day.

The 5K and 10K take you around a 5 km loop along the beach and Boulevard Eugène Cornuché. It’s pancake-flat, which makes it ideal for chasing a personal best and testing your speed. These races are held on Saturday, which is also a great chance for marathoners’ friends and family to race too, especially since there’s also a kids’ run, the Deauvi’Kids.

Sign up for the Deauville Marathon and start training

The Deauville Marathon’s success is powered by dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic spectators who show up to support and cheer runners all along the course. With a festive, friendly atmosphere, it’s the perfect race to share an unforgettable endurance sports weekend with friends or family.

Don’t miss this unique experience, sign up now to join the next Deauville Marathon.

And to prepare properly, you can train with a RunMotion Coach marathon training plan, like Romain who ran 2:36, or Laurent in 4:37. The RunMotion Coach training option is available during the race registration process.

Romain can’t recommend this race enough: “On top of setting a new personal best, I loved the Deauville Marathon course, and the two 21 km loops meant I always knew exactly where I stood. It helped me mentally when my legs started to feel heavy, and I was able to push again along the seafront in the final kilometer.”

See you soon at the Deauville International Marathon!
