Once reserved for ultra-trail races and mountain trails, trail running poles have become essential gear for many runners, including those tackling mid-distance events. Used correctly, they help take pressure off your legs on long climbs, spread the effort between your upper and lower body, and save valuable energy as the miles add up.

However, not all trail running poles are created equal. Between ultralight carbon models, more durable aluminum options, and folding systems that vary in speed and convenience, choosing the right pair is not always straightforward.

The best model primarily depends on how you run. A racer targeting a fast ultra will favor lightweight, highly compact poles, while a trail runner entering a few races each year may prioritize reliability and ease of use.

In this comparison, we have selected ten trail running pole models available from EkoSport to help you choose the pair best suited to your goals in 2026.

How to choose trail running poles

Before comparing different models, it is important to define your needs. Not every pole is designed for the same purpose.

The first consideration is material. Carbon trail running poles stand out for their low weight and excellent vibration absorption. They are especially popular for racing and long distances, where every gram counts. Aluminum models are generally slightly heavier, but offer greater impact resistance and are often an excellent choice for your first pair.

The folding system also deserves your attention. Three-section folding trail poles are now the most common option in trail running. They fit easily into a pole quiver or hydration pack and deploy quickly when the gradient steepens.

Finally, grip and wrist strap comfort play an important role. A secure, comfortable grip reduces forearm fatigue and makes poles easier to handle while running. Some brands now offer particularly practical magnetic attachment systems or detachable wrist straps.

RunMotion Coach Tip

Poles are truly effective when you use them regularly in training. Before your key race, take time to learn how to fold, unfold, and stow them without stopping. You will move more smoothly and efficiently on race day.

Comparison table: the best trail running poles for 2026

Over the past few years, carbon-plated running shoes have transformed road running. Once reserved for elite athletes, they are now available to every runner looking to improve performance over 10K, half marathon, or marathon distance.

Their promise is simple: improve running efficiency through the combination of next-generation foam and a carbon plate embedded in the midsole. The result is a more responsive shoe that boosts energy return and helps you maintain a fast pace with often less muscular fatigue.

However, not all carbon-plated shoes deliver the same ride. Some prioritize generous cushioning for the marathon, while others focus above all on explosiveness and speed. Your choice will therefore depend on both your experience level and the distance you are training for.

In this comparison, we have selected eight of the best carbon-plated running shoes available from EkoSport to help you find the model best suited to your 2026 racing goals.

How to choose carbon-plated running shoes

Before investing in carbon-plated running shoes, it is important to define how you will use them. These models are designed to run fast and perform at their best at sustained paces. They are not necessarily intended for everyday easy runs.

The first factor is your target distance. Some shoes excel over 5K or 10K thanks to their exceptional responsiveness, while others prioritize comfort and stability to help you maintain a high level of performance all the way through a marathon.

Foam performance is also a key consideration. The latest foams strike an outstanding balance of cushioning, bounce, and low weight. Combined with a carbon plate, they create the propulsive feeling that defines this new generation of racing shoes.

Finally, remember that the best carbon-plated shoes are the ones that feel comfortable on your feet. A highly aggressive shoe may be perfect for some runners, while others will prefer a more stable, easier-to-handle model.

RunMotion Coach tip

Carbon-plated shoes reach their full potential at faster paces. Save them primarily for your races and a few key workouts to preserve their responsive qualities and maximize their lifespan.

Best carbon-plated running shoes 2026 comparison table

Taking part in the UTMB is not just about preparing your legs and mindset. Over 174 kilometres and nearly 9,900 metres of elevation gain around Mont Blanc, the gear you carry is an integral part of your race strategy. Above all, it is a safety essential: in the mountains, conditions can change very quickly.

The organisation therefore requires mandatory equipment so runners can cope with sometimes challenging weather, as well as wait safely in the event of an issue or rescue operation. Be aware that this gear must not simply be present at the start. It must stay with the runner throughout the entire race.

Here is everything you need to know about UTMB 2026 mandatory gear.

Why does the UTMB require mandatory gear?

August may seem like the perfect time to run around Mont Blanc. Yet altitude and the Alpine environment can bring conditions that are very different from those experienced in the valleys.

The organisation points out that temperatures can rise above 30°C, but it can also become very cold at altitude, with feels-like temperatures dropping to -10°C above 2,000 metres. Rain, hail, wind, fog and even snow are all possible along the course.

Mandatory equipment must therefore allow runners to handle these changes, including if they have to spend part of the night outside or wait for rescue services.

This is an important point: the official UTMB 2026 mandatory gear list is a minimum safety requirement, not necessarily the ideal kit for every runner. The organiser also recommends adapting your equipment to your own abilities and testing it during training runs in a range of conditions.

UTMB 2026 mandatory gear: much more than a checklist

The 2026 regulations state that every runner must carry all mandatory equipment in a pack that cannot be swapped during the race. Checks may take place before the start, during the event and right up to the finish line.

Your gear must also remain accessible and available for inspection at all times. Avoid burying everything at the bottom of your pack or placing it in packaging that prevents an immediate check. In particular, non-resealable sealed bags are prohibited.

The rule to remember

Mandatory equipment left at the hotel, in a drop bag or in a car is not available to you. Even an item you think you will never need must stay with you for the entire race.

How to prepare your UTMB mandatory gear

You should check the official list before every edition, as the organisation may update its requirements. For 2026, it distinguishes between core mandatory equipment, which applies whatever the conditions, and additional equipment that may be activated depending on the forecast and announced conditions.

You must have all additional equipment available when you arrive at the event. Items activated by the organisation will be announced no later than 24 hours before the start and must then be carried during the race.

This distinction is essential when preparing your running pack. Do not wait until the day before the start to look for a potentially hard-to-find piece of gear.

Our advice: prepare two levels of gear

A smart approach is to organise your equipment into two categories:

core gear, which always goes with you;

weather gear, kept ready to add as soon as the organisation announces its activation.

This prevents you from discovering at the last minute that a jacket, warm layer or another essential item is missing from your kit.

Do not try to save every gram

In ultra-trail running, the desire to reduce pack weight is understandable. Saving a few hundred grams can seem worthwhile over almost two days of racing.

But mandatory gear is not where you should pursue ultralight choices at all costs.

The UTMB regulations explicitly state that it is important to avoid choosing the lightest clothing possible. Your clothing must first and foremost provide sufficient protection against cold, wind, heavy rain and snow.

A jacket that weighs a few dozen grams less is not necessarily the better choice if it offers less protection when conditions deteriorate.

A useful question to ask yourself

Instead of asking, “What is the lightest piece of gear?”, ask yourself, “With this equipment, could I stay outside for several hours if conditions turn bad?”

For a mountain ultra, the second question is far more relevant.

Protecting your gear from rain: a detail that can become essential

UTMB also recommends packing your equipment to protect it from rain and snow and keep it dry until you need it.

This may seem secondary when you are packing your race vest. It feels much less so after several hours in the rain.

A wet jacket or insulating layer stored in an unprotected pack can lose much of its usefulness precisely when you need it most. Dry bags or waterproof pouches allow you to separate your gear and keep part of your pack contents dry.

It is also a great way to organise your pack. Rather than having one compartment full of mixed equipment, each category can be easy to identify and access.

Mistakes to avoid before the start

Some mistakes are easy to make, especially when you are trying to optimise your race pack.

Leaving some gear in your drop bag

Your drop bag must not be used to store mandatory equipment.

The regulations state that all mandatory gear must be carried by the runner throughout the race. Drop bags are therefore not an extension of your running pack.

Making your gear difficult to access

During an equipment check, you must be able to show your gear. Do not organise your pack in a way that makes every item impossible to reach.

A logical pack organisation saves time and helps you avoid unpleasant surprises.

Failing to test your equipment

Mandatory gear is only truly useful if you know how to use it.

Try your jacket in the rain. Run with your pack fully loaded. Test your hydration system. Go for a night run with your headlamps.

UTMB itself recommends testing your equipment in training and in varied conditions.

Headlamps: essential gear you must not overlook

Much of the UTMB takes place at night, so lighting management is a key part of your ultra-trail preparation.

For the 2026 edition, there is one specific point to remember: one of the two headlamps used for the UTMB must have a red-light mode for a section located in the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve.

It is not enough to check that you have two working headlamps. You must also make sure that one of them has this feature.

As with the rest of your UTMB 2026 mandatory gear, test your headlamps before race day. Battery life, changing batteries or modes, comfort, and using them with a cap or beanie are all details that become important after several hours of effort.

What about poles?

Poles are among the items that require special attention.

The UTMB 2026 mandatory gear regulations set out one simple rule: if you choose to take poles, you must keep them for the entire race. You cannot start without poles and collect them later along the course. They cannot be placed in drop bags either.

You should also know that poles may be prohibited on certain sections of the course for safety or environmental protection reasons. Specific signs will indicate the affected areas.

This means you need to decide on your pole strategy before the start and cannot rely on changing your setup during the race.

What should you bring in addition to mandatory gear?

The mandatory kit provides a safety foundation. It does not necessarily cover every runner’s personal needs. Your experience, pace, sensitivity to cold, nutrition strategy and tolerance for effort will all influence what you choose to add.

A few items to consider

Depending on your habits and needs, you may want to consider:

a food supply suited to your race nutrition strategy (discover the RunMotion Race Plan);

extra clothing if you are particularly sensitive to the cold;

blister prevention and minor injury supplies;

a pouch to carry your waste;

a power bank if it fits your phone and watch use strategy;

spare clothes in drop bags where permitted and relevant;

your own cutlery if you want to eat the hot meals offered at aid stations.

On this final point, the 2026 regulations state that no disposable cutlery, cups or bowls will be provided at checkpoints or aid stations. Runners are therefore encouraged to bring their own utensils if they want to eat hot food.

UTMB 2026 mandatory gear and self-sufficiency

To understand why this list matters so much, it is worth returning to the UTMB principle of semi-self-sufficiency.

Between two aid stations, runners must be able to manage their own nutrition, clothing and safety needs. The regulations notably require them to leave each aid station with enough food and drink to reach the next one.

The organisation provides aid stations, but they do not replace runner self-sufficiency. This is also why your pack should not be viewed as simple storage. It is a genuine safety reserve for the hours ahead.

What happens during an equipment check?

Equipment checks can take place at different points during the race. They may be scheduled or random, and some may be carried out at the finish line, aid stations or rescue posts. Surprise checks may also occur elsewhere along the route.

You must be able to present your equipment immediately. The regulations provide for penalties, including disqualification, if a runner does not have all mandatory gear.

The goal is clearly not to catch participants out. These checks are primarily a reminder of one reality of mountain ultra-trail running: mandatory gear can become survival equipment if the race does not go to plan.

UTMB 2026 mandatory gear checklist

Before you zip up your pack for the final time, take a few minutes to check your equipment methodically.

Core mandatory gear checked against the official 2026 list

Additional equipment available if needed

Weather conditions checked

Any additional gear activated by the organisation added to the pack

Two headlamps ready to use

One headlamp equipped with the red-light mode required for UTMB 2026

Spare batteries or backup power planned for your equipment

Mountain-ready clothing selected for protection, not simply low weight

Gear protected from rain and snow

Equipment easy to access in your pack

Pack tested in real-world conditions

Hydration and nutrition planned for the sections between aid stations

Poles: decision made before the start

Personal utensils packed if you want to eat hot food at aid stations

The right gear is the gear you can use at the right time

Ultimately, preparing your UTMB 2026 mandatory gear is not about filling your pack with a long list of accessories. The goal is to build a reliable system, one you know inside out and that will allow you to adapt to the mountains.

Over a race of 174 kilometres and nearly 9,900 metres of elevation gain, conditions can change dramatically between the start in Chamonix and the return to the valley.

A hot day can give way to a freezing night. Dry ground can become slippery in the rain. Simple fatigue can turn a minor challenge into a genuine problem after several dozen hours of effort.

That is why the best equipment is not necessarily the lightest or the most expensive. It is the gear that is suited to your needs, tested before race day, properly packed and immediately available when you need it.

Above all, remember one rule: your UTMB 2026 mandatory gear must stay with you from the start all the way to the finish.

Check before you go

Requirements may change from one edition to the next, so always consult the official list before the race. For the 2026 edition, the French regulations shall prevail in the event of any conflict between language versions.

Choosing your trail running vest is almost as important as choosing your shoes. On a multi-hour run or race day, a poorly fitted vest can quickly become a source of discomfort, causing chafing, bouncing, difficult access to your gear, or poor weight distribution.

Conversely, a great trail running vest is one you barely notice. It moves with your body, makes it easy to stay hydrated, and provides enough storage to carry mandatory equipment, nutrition, and a waterproof jacket without getting in the way of your stride.

The market has evolved significantly in recent years. Trail running vests in 2026 are more lightweight, more breathable, and feature increasingly practical storage systems. Some models prioritise performance and short-distance racing, while others are designed for ultramarathons and long mountain adventures.

In this comparison, we have selected ten models available from EkoSport to help you find the trail running vest best suited to your needs.

How do you choose a trail running vest?

Before looking at brands, the first question to ask yourself is about capacity.

For short trail races or training runs lasting a few hours, a 5 to 8-litre vest is generally enough. It lets you carry water, a few snacks, a phone, and a lightweight jacket while staying compact.

For long trail races or ultras, a 10 to 15-litre capacity often becomes more comfortable. You will have enough space for the mandatory gear required by race organisers, as well as extra clothing in case the weather changes.

Comfort matters just as much as capacity. A good vest should fit your body shape without restricting your breathing. The best models remain stable even when the soft flasks are full and give you easy access to water or nutrition without taking the vest off.

Finally, take time to look at pocket layout. Well-organised storage can save valuable time during a race and prevents you from having to stop to find a jacket or energy bar.

RunMotion Coach tip

Do not buy a vest based on capacity alone. A well-organised 12-litre model can feel less bulky than a poorly designed 8-litre vest. Above all, what matters is stability and easy access to your gear while running.

Key takeaways

The best trail running vest is not necessarily the one with the biggest capacity or the most pockets. Above all, it is the one that meets your needs and disappears while you run.

For versatile use, the Salomon ADV Skin 12 remains an essential benchmark. Racers will prefer the low weight of the S/LAB Ultra 12, while trail runners looking for excellent value can choose the ASICS Fujitrail Vest or the Raidlight Responsiv 8L.

Just as with short-distance trail running shoes or long-distance trail running shoes, the best way to make your choice is to test your gear before an important goal race. A few training runs are often enough to confirm that the vest fits correctly, its capacity suits your needs, and all your equipment remains easy to reach as the kilometres add up.

Choosing a pair of running shoes in 2026 has never been more complex. From max-cushioned models and versatile daily trainers to faster shoes for speed workouts and options built to handle big mileage, every brand now offers an extensive range.

The good news is that there is now a running shoe for every type of runner. The less good news is that it can sometimes be difficult to find your way through all the options.

The best model is not necessarily the lightest or the most expensive. An effective shoe is, above all, one that matches your running, your training frequency, your build and the feel you are looking for. A marathon runner chasing a time goal will not have the same expectations as someone who runs three times a week simply for enjoyment.

In this guide, we have selected 10 essential running shoes for 2026, available from EkoSport. From comfortable shoes for daily miles to the most responsive models for picking up the pace, this comparison will help you choose the pair that will support you throughout the season.

How to Choose Your Running Shoes

Before comparing different models, it is worth remembering that no single shoe suits every runner.

The first criterion to consider is how you plan to use them. A pair designed for easy runs will generally prioritise comfort and cushioning, while a more responsive shoe will aim to deliver a snappier stride. Many runners choose to own two complementary pairs, one for daily training and another for speed sessions or races.

Cushioning also plays an important role. Modern foams now reduce impact effectively while maintaining a good level of energy return. Runners who log high mileage will generally appreciate generous cushioning, while those seeking a more direct feel may prefer a firmer shoe that sits closer to the ground.

Weight is often highlighted by manufacturers, but it should not be viewed in isolation. A few extra grams can sometimes provide greater comfort or stability, a valuable benefit when your runs last longer than an hour.

Finally, fit remains essential. A shoe should hold the foot securely without creating pressure points. Even the best shoe on paper will never be the right choice if it does not suit your foot shape.

RunMotion Coach Tip

If you run regularly, rotating between two pairs of running shoes not only varies the muscular load, it also extends the lifespan of each model.

Long-distance trail running is a discipline in its own right. When you spend five, eight, or sometimes more than 10 or 20 hours on the trails, the qualities you need from a shoe change dramatically. Lightweight design still matters, but it is no longer the top priority. As the miles build up, comfort, stability, and protection become a trail runner’s greatest allies.

Long-distance trail running shoes that can save your legs on long descents, keep your foot secure as fatigue sets in, and provide reassuring grip across every type of terrain can make a huge difference. On the other hand, a shoe that is too minimalist or poorly suited to your needs can turn the final miles into a real ordeal.

Brands have understood this well. In 2026, new trail running shoes are focusing on more responsive foams, more stable platforms, and ever more effective outsoles, without sacrificing weight. The best long-distance trail shoes are no longer designed simply to get you through an ultra. They also help you run more efficiently, with less muscle fatigue and greater confidence.

In this comparison, we have selected 10 long-distance trail running shoe models available from EkoSport that rank among the market’s leading options. The goal is not to name one universal shoe, but to help you find the model that genuinely suits your trail running.

What is long-distance trail running?

The term “long-distance trail running” can mean very different things. For some runners, it is a 45 km race in the mountains. For others, it immediately brings to mind major ultras exceeding 100 km. In practice, a trail race is generally considered “long” when the effort lasts more than four to five hours.

From that point on, fatigue gradually changes your stride, foot placement becomes less precise, your quads absorb thousands of additional impacts, and your feet often start to swell. A shoe that felt perfect after one hour of running may then reveal its limitations.

That is why long-distance trail running shoes prioritize a different balance from models built for short, explosive formats. They generally offer more cushioning, a more stable platform, and a fit designed to stay comfortable as the miles keep coming.

Another factor comes into play: the variety of terrain. During the same race, it is common to move between fast dirt tracks, forest trails, scree fields, muddy sections, and long rocky descents. Good long-distance trail shoes must be able to adapt to all these conditions without ever making you feel like you are fighting the terrain.

RunMotion Coach Tip

Over long distances, your feet can go up by as much as half a shoe size over the hours. If you are between two sizes and the shoe feels snug, it is often best to choose the larger size to reduce friction and toe trauma.

How to choose long-distance trail running shoes

It is tempting to compare only shoe weights or the latest innovations announced by brands. Yet these criteria often take a back seat when you are preparing for a 50 km, 80 km, or 100 km trail race.

The first factor to consider is comfort. A highly capable shoe that is uncomfortable will not stay that way after several hours of effort. The fit needs to hold the foot securely without creating pressure points, while the upper should remain flexible enough to accommodate the foot’s natural swelling.

Cushioning also plays a major role. It does more than absorb impact. It helps limit muscle fatigue, especially on long descents. The new foams used by leading brands now make it possible to combine protection and energy return, explaining their presence in most premium trail running shoes.

Stability is another often underestimated criterion. The more fatigue builds, the harder it becomes to control your foot placement. A stable platform and reliable lateral support provide valuable confidence, especially when the trail gets technical.

Finally, you need to match the shoe to the terrain you run on most often. Highly rocky alpine routes do not place the same demands on your shoes as forest paths or smooth, runnable trails. A highly aggressive outsole will not always be the best option if most of your runs take place on dry, non-technical terrain.

RunMotion Coach Tip

The best shoe will never replace race-specific preparation. Long training runs allow your muscles, tendons, and feet to gradually adapt to the demands of long-distance trail running. They are also the best opportunity to test and validate your gear before race day.

Comparison table: the best long-distance trail running shoes for 2026

The ratings below are an overall assessment based on the technical features, market positioning, and on-trail performance of these long-distance trail running shoes. They make it easier to compare models, but your experience may vary depending on your build, running gait, and the terrain you run on.

Key takeaways

Every model in this comparison can support you through a 50 km trail race or beyond, but they do not all meet exactly the same needs.

If you are looking for the most versatile long-distance trail running shoes, it is hard to overlook the HOKA Speedgoat 7 and Saucony Xodus Ultra 5. Both offer an excellent balance of cushioning, grip, protection, and comfort, which is why they have ranked among the market’s reference models for several years.

Trail runners who spend most of their time in the mountains will likely prefer the Salomon S/LAB Genesis, HOKA Mafate 5, or La Sportiva Prodigio Pro. Their precision and traction let you approach technical terrain with greater confidence, even when fatigue starts to take over.

On the other hand, if your priority is reaching the finish line with fresher legs, the Salomon Ultra Glide 4 and New Balance Hierro v9 are among the most comfortable shoes in this selection. Their generous cushioning helps absorb impact and limits muscle fatigue on long runs.

Finally, runners used to zero drop will find the Altra Olympus 6 to be a particularly protective shoe, with a generous toe box that gives toes more space, a valuable advantage when feet swell over the hours.

Short-distance trail running is now one of the most dynamic disciplines in trail running. From 10 to 45 km, these events demand shoes that strike an excellent balance between lightweight design, grip and responsiveness.

In 2026, brands continue to innovate with increasingly high-performance models. High-rebound foams, ultra-light uppers, grippier outsoles… the choice is huge, and finding the trail shoe that truly matches your running profile is not always straightforward.

In this article, we have selected ten of the best short-distance trail running shoes for 2026 available from Ekosport. Whether you are a competitor chasing speed or a trail runner looking for a versatile pair for training and racing, you are sure to find a model that suits your needs.

What is a short-distance trail race?

Contrary to popular belief, a short trail race is not defined by distance alone. In France, a short-distance trail is generally considered to be up to around 45 kilometres, but elevation gain, terrain technicality and time on feet also matter.

For this type of race, runners are primarily looking for:

lightweight construction to save energy;

excellent grip across varied terrain;

a responsive shoe that helps you accelerate again after corners and climbs;

enough protection to take on technical trails without weighing down your stride.

Choosing the right shoe therefore becomes a genuine performance factor.

How to choose short-distance trail running shoes

Before choosing your next pair, several criteria deserve your attention.

Weight

The lighter the shoe, the more it supports a quick, responsive stride. Race-focused models often weigh between 220 and 260 g.

Grip

Lug design is essential and should match the terrain. Deep, aggressive lugs are more effective in forests or on wet ground, while a more versatile outsole will suit dry, smooth-running trails.

Cushioning

Short-distance trail running generally prioritises responsiveness over maximum cushioning. Some shoes still offer an excellent balance of comfort and energy return.

Stability

On technical sections, good stability builds confidence and helps reduce the risk of ankle sprains.

Your goal

Are you targeting performance? Choose a lightweight, highly responsive model.

Looking for a shoe to train in and race across different distances? A versatile model will be a better fit.

Are you training for your first 10K and wondering whether a GPS watch is essential?

It is a question many beginner runners ask. When you look at the other athletes on the start line, it can quickly feel as though you need the right gear to succeed. But the answer is simple: no, you do not need a GPS watch to run a 10K.

That said, it can be a real help in certain situations. As is often the case in running, it all comes down to how you like to run, and what makes you feel confident.

You can complete your first 10K without a watch

Let us take away some unnecessary pressure right away: your watch will not get you to the finish line of your first 10K.

What really matters is following a training plan that suits you, staying consistent in your preparation, and starting at a pace you can maintain all the way to the finish.

Plenty of runners complete their first 10K without a GPS watch. Some simply use their phone, while others do not look at their time at all during the race. If your main goal is to enjoy a great first race experience, this approach makes perfect sense.

When can a GPS watch really help?

Avoid starting too fast on race day

This is probably the most common mistake in a first 10K.

The start is exciting, there are runners all around you, the atmosphere is incredible, and before you know it, you are running much faster than planned. A watch lets you take a quick look at your pace and think: “Oops, I went out a little too hard, I’ll ease off slightly.”

That one simple adjustment can save you from suffering through the final miles.

Track your progress during training

Over the weeks, a watch automatically records your runs, including distance, duration, pace and sometimes heart rate. It is not about collecting statistics. Above all, it is a way to see that your training efforts are paying off.

The route that felt tough a month ago becomes easier, you can run a little longer without stopping, and your pace improves naturally. These small breakthroughs are often hugely motivating.

Get guidance during workouts

When you are following a training plan, a compatible GPS watch can also guide you through your workouts.

For example, if your plan includes pickups or pace changes, you do not need to count the minutes or check your phone. The watch simply tells you when to speed up and when to recover with a vibration and/or an audible alert.

With RunMotion Coach, workouts can be synced directly from your app to your GPS watch. You can then let the watch guide you through your training and focus on what really matters: running and enjoying the feeling.

Be careful not to become dependent on your watch

A watch is still only a tool, and especially when you are starting out, the risk is wanting to control everything. You check your pace every 10 seconds. You worry because you are five seconds slower per kilometre. You almost forget to enjoy your run.

To improve as a runner, it is also important to learn to listen to your body. Can you still talk while running? Is your breathing comfortable? Do you feel relaxed, or are you already tense? This information can sometimes be more useful than a number on a screen.

Running without a watch is training too

Doing some runs without a watch is an excellent habit. It helps you develop what coaches call perceived effort. Little by little, you learn to recognise an easy pace, a steady pace, or the pace you can hold throughout an entire race.

This feel for effort becomes invaluable on the day your GPS loses signal, or when you simply decide to run for pleasure. Many experienced runners alternate between both approaches: some workouts are guided by their watch, while others are done entirely by feel.

So, should you buy one before your first 10K?

If you already own a GPS watch, make the most of it. It can help you manage your pace better and track your progress.

If you do not have one, do not think it is essential. It is often better to invest time in consistent training than to search for the perfect piece of running gear.

And if you are unsure about getting one, there is nothing stopping you from waiting until after your first 10K. By then, you will have a much clearer idea of which features would actually be useful to you.

FAQ: GPS watches and your first 10K

Can I run my first 10K with my phone instead of a watch?

Yes, absolutely. Your phone can help you record your runs and track your progress. You can carry it in your hand, a running belt or an armband. The main advantage of a GPS watch is convenience: it is easier to check while running and can guide you through certain workouts without needing to look at it.

Will it actually help me run faster?

Not directly. A watch will never replace consistent training and solid preparation. However, it can help you manage your pace better, avoid starting too fast, and track your progress week after week.

Is a GPS watch useful for beginner runners?

Yes, if you use it as a helpful tool rather than a constraint. It can reassure you, help you understand your paces, and keep you motivated as you see your progress. But you can also improve perfectly well by running more by feel.

Do I need a GPS watch to follow a training plan?

No, it is not essential. You can follow a training plan with a phone or simply a stopwatch, but a compatible watch can make workouts easier by showing you the work and recovery intervals directly.

Which watch should a beginner runner choose?

You do not need to choose the most advanced model. To train for a first 10K, a comfortable watch with the essential features, such as distance, pace and workout tracking, will usually be enough. If you would like more data, you can choose a higher-end model with heart rate monitoring, an altimeter, music and more.

Runna has become one of the most talked-about running apps in recent years and for good reason. It’s well-designed, syncs smoothly with Garmin and Apple Watch, and the plans are built by experienced coaches. Since Strava acquired it in 2025, its user base has only grown.

But not every runner finds it the right fit. Here’s a look at why some runners move on from Runna and what alternatives are worth trying.

Why some runners look for a Runna alternative

Runna works well for a lot of people. But recurring feedback from users points to a few specific friction points.

The training load can feel high

Physical therapists and run coaches have raised concerns that Runna’s default plans can be intense, particularly around mileage progression and pacing targets. Some users have reported picking up overuse injuries — tendinitis, knee issues — especially in the early weeks of a plan.

This isn’t necessarily a flaw in the app’s design. Ambitious plans work for some runners. But if your priority is staying healthy over the long term rather than hitting aggressive targets, the default intensity level can feel like too much.

Plans are structured around road running

Runna is built for road running: 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon.

If you’re also doing trail running, want cross-training incorporated into your weekly schedule, or train across different surfaces and terrains, the app doesn’t offer much flexibility in that direction.

Limited adaptability in real life

Some runners find that while Runna allows you to shuffle sessions within a week, the overall plan doesn’t always respond dynamically to what’s actually happening — accumulated fatigue, a missed block, a period of higher stress. You can move individual workouts, but the plan’s structure stays relatively fixed.

What to look for in an alternative

Before switching apps, it’s worth being clear about what matters most to you:

Do you want a plan that adjusts automatically based on how your training is actually going?

Do you run trails as well as roads?

Is injury prevention a higher priority than hitting pace targets?

Do you want cross-training or strength work built into the same plan?

Your answers will point you toward the right tool.

RunMotion Coach: a solid alternative worth testing

If you’re a runner who values adaptive planning, trains on trails as well as roads, or has had injury issues with more aggressive apps, RunMotion Coach is worth a look.

Built since 2018 by Guillaume Adam — a former French national team athlete, certified coach, and researcher at MIT and the CNRS — RunMotion Coach is designed around a core principle: training should adapt to you, not the other way around.

Plans that adjust as you go

Rather than generating a fixed plan that stays static regardless of what happens week to week, RunMotion Coach monitors your training load continuously and adjusts upcoming sessions accordingly. If you’re accumulating fatigue, the plan responds. If you miss a session, it recalibrates. This dynamic approach to load management is one of the key differences from apps that produce a structured PDF equivalent.

Built for trail runners too

RunMotion Coach covers both road running and trail, including ultra-trail preparation. If your week includes both road sessions and mountain runs — or if you’re building toward a trail race — it’s one of the few apps that accommodates this without requiring you to patch things together manually.

RunMotion Coach is the official coaching app of the UTMB World Series.

Progressive load, with injury prevention in mind

The algorithm behind RunMotion Coach was built with scientific literature on training load and injury risk as its foundation. Progressivity — increasing volume and intensity gradually enough that your body can actually adapt — is central to how plans are constructed, not an afterthought.

More than just running sessions

RunMotion Coach includes strength and conditioning work, mobility, and mental preparation as part of the training plan. The idea is that performance comes from the full picture, not just the runs.

Quick comparison

Runna

RunMotion Coach

Road running plans

Trail running plans

Adaptive load management

Partial

Strength & Conditioning

Optional

Integrated

Injury prevention focus

Mixed reviews

Core principle

Garmin / Apple Watch sync

Cross training

Built by running experts

Other alternatives to consider

Nike Run Club: free, less structured, great for runners who want flexibility without commitment to a rigid plan. Lower intensity than Runna by design.

Garmin Coach: works well if you’re already deep in the Garmin ecosystem. Plans are straightforward and tied to your device data, but limited in scope beyond road racing distances.

The bottom line

Runna is a well-built app that works for a lot of runners, and if it’s working for you, there’s no reason to switch. But if you’ve found the training load too aggressive, the paces hard to calibrate, or the lack of trail support a genuine gap — it’s worth trying something else.

RunMotion Coach is a strong alternative for runners who want science-backed, adaptive training that covers both road and trail. You can test it free and see how the approach feels for your training.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to Runna?

Yes. Nike Run Club is free and offers guided running plans. RunMotion Coach offers a free trial. Both are worth trying before committing to a subscription.

What running app is best for trail runners?

Most running apps focus on road races. RunMotion Coach is one of the few that includes dedicated trail and ultra-trail training plans alongside road running. RunMotion Coach is the official coaching app of the UTMB World Series.

Why do some runners get injured using Runna?

Some physical therapists and coaches have noted that Runna’s default plans can ramp up mileage and intensity quickly, which increases injury risk for runners who aren’t already at a high training volume. Adjusting the training intensity in the app’s preferences can help, but some runners prefer an app that manages this progressivity automatically.

When you go trail running, in training or on race day, you might wonder whether it’s worth bringing poles. They’re especially recommended for long efforts and big elevation gain. Here are our tips to choose the trail running poles that fit your style, your terrain, and your performance goals.

The key criteria to pick the right trail poles include weight, material, grip, packability, and length.

The shaft, material and weight

The shaft material largely determines both the pole’s weight and its stability. Most trail running poles are made from aluminum or carbon fiber.

Aluminum

Aluminum is heavier, but often more durable, with solid, confidence-inspiring plant and push on rough ground.

Carbon

Carbon fiber is lighter, so it’s a favorite for runners chasing minimal weight and better running economy over long distances. That said, the added flex and occasional fragility, especially on folding poles, can feel less stable when you really need strong support.

At the end of the shaft is the pole tip. Check durability and whether the tip can be replaced, because it’s often the part that wears out the fastest.

How packable should your trail poles be?

You’ll find one-piece poles, folding poles, and telescopic poles, depending on whether you want to stash them on your back or in your pack during runnable sections, for example.

One-piece poles

In general, one-piece poles are best for continuous use throughout a trail run or race, while folding poles are more suited to occasional use when the course alternates between climbs and flats.

A one-piece trail pole is more stable and robust. It’s especially useful for a Vertical Kilometer (VK), because that format demands a lot of power. Check out our tips on using poles on climbs. The downside is that one-piece poles can feel bulky on flatter trails, or whenever you’ll need them less than about 60% of the race.

Three-section folding poles or telescopic poles

Folding or telescopic trail running poles are easier to carry and more versatile. Look for a simple, fast deployment system, and practice until opening and closing them becomes automatic. There’s nothing worse than struggling to unfold your poles when it’s freezing cold and your hands are numb, experience speaking, haha.

Make a habit of stowing your poles when you don’t need them, or when the terrain becomes very technical. Clip them to your pack or your running belt.

A committed runner will usually prefer folding poles for better mobility during training and racing.

Which grips should you choose?

Foam or cork?

Trail pole grips typically come in foam or cork. Cork’s main advantage is durability, and it absorbs less moisture. Then you can choose between wrist straps or glove-style straps.

Wrist strap or glove-style strap?

A classic wrist strap lets you adjust hand placement and switch it up if you start to feel hotspots, under the hand, lower on the grip, and so on. However, it can be more irritating because the pressure is concentrated in a smaller area.

Glove-style straps spread pressure more evenly, help you stay relaxed, and can improve push-off efficiency, similar to cross-country skiing. Most elite trail runners use them now.

Choosing the right length for trail running poles

For trail running poles, a common recommendation is the ratio 0.67 x your height. More precisely, choose a pole that, with your arms relaxed by your sides, puts your hand at grip height when your elbow is bent at 90 degrees, like a ski pole fitting.

Leading trail brands include Leki, Black Diamond, and Guidetti.

We recommend Guidetti poles, a French brand based in the heart of the Alps. Aluminum or carbon, folding or one-piece, every option is available. Their folding system is fast and reliable, ideal for races and long training runs. We also like their local commitment, with production largely made in France, and the attention they put into product durability.

See or be seen, that’s the question. When you run at night, whether on the road or out on the trails, everything feels different than in daylight. A headlamp becomes more than an accessory, it’s a key piece of gear for your comfort, your safety, and your performance.

Headlamps even show up on the mandatory gear lists for certain trail races and ultra-trails.

But be careful, not all headlamps are created equal and considering the investment, it’s worth choosing wisely. Today, we’re shining a light on headlamps, true icons of ultra-trail running and a symbol of night races like the SaintéLyon.

What’s the difference between a road runner’s needs and a trail runner’s?

It’s all running, sure, but the difference between road running and trail running is the environment. Your headlamp is what helps you adapt to that environment.

A headlamp for road running

In urban running, the priority isn’t seeing, it’s being seen. City lights do most of the work, so there’s no need to chase big power. A headlamp between 100 and 200 lumens is more than enough. Go higher and you’ll mostly end up dazzling other people.

For battery life, you don’t need it to last all night. Choose a lightweight model with sensible runtime. What matters most is visibility from every angle, white light up front, a red rear LED, and a reflective headband.

A headlamp for trail running

On the trails, far from light pollution, your headlamp changes roles. It’s no longer a signal, it’s your main tool for reading the terrain, roots, rocks, and elevation changes.

Without enough power, every step demands extra focus, which eventually drains you mentally and increases your risk of falling.

The three key criteria to prioritize for trail running:

Brightness: minimum 400 lumens for a short trail run, 700 to 1,100 lm for longer races or full-night efforts

Battery life: at least 3 hours in normal mode for trail, 6+ hours for ultra. A headlamp dying in the middle of the night, miles from anywhere, is the scenario you absolutely want to avoid

Water resistance: cold and moisture hurt battery performance. Go for at least IPX4, and IPX6 for tough conditions

What are the key criteria for choosing a good headlamp?

Now that we’ve covered the different needs of road runners and trail runners, let’s break down the key numbers you should keep in mind while shopping for a running headlamp.

Brightness

LED brightness is measured in lumens. To really understand what that means, you also need to separate lumens from beam distance. Contrary to what you might think, a high-lumen headlamp does not automatically light up far ahead. It depends on the beam pattern, which we’ll cover next.

For road running

As mentioned earlier, blinding people around you can put you in more danger than running with no light at all. So buying a headlamp above 300 lumens isn’t necessary. The sweet spot is usually between 150 and 300 lumens.

For trail running

To turn night into day, there are ultra-powerful, high-performance models like Petzl’s SWIFT RL and NAO RL ranges, pushing 1,200 to 1,500 lumens. But don’t worry, a model between 400 and 700 lumens is plenty for most night training runs and trail races. Plus, lower brightness usually means better battery life.

Beam pattern

We touched on it above, but beam pattern is one of the most important things when you talk about headlamp performance. There are three main types:

Wide beams: the light is spread evenly, giving you peripheral vision. It won’t help much when you need to pick out a root on a narrow path

Focused beams: the light throws farther, perfect for spotting obstacles early, especially in trail running

Mixed beams (wide + focused): the best of both worlds. You can see your feet with the wide beam and look ahead in detail to anticipate your next moves

You guessed it, a mixed beam is the ideal setup, combining power and precision so you’re ready for anything, especially on technical trails. Most models offer a beam distance of around 100 to 150 m, and up to 200 m for top-end headlamps. That said, a wide-beam headlamp can be perfect for city runs. Power is lower, but you stay visible, even from behind.

Battery life

As we explained, battery life matters most in trail running. While many headlamps advertise 80 to 110 hours in eco mode, you should choose a model that delivers at least 3 hours in full power for trail running, and ideally 6 hours for ultra-trail.

That gives you enough time to go from aid station to aid station and swap either batteries (not very eco-friendly), a spare rechargeable pack, or even your whole headlamp.

Weight

The last big factor is weight. Nobody wants extra load on their head, especially if you also wear a cap or headband. That added bulk can get annoying fast. So comfort and a lightweight feel are crucial. Ideally, try it on first, since we all have different head shapes and different tolerance to weight.

If you’re buying online, aim for a headlamp under 100 g, otherwise it can start to feel restrictive. The headband should also be comfortable, not just a thin cord that’s light but becomes irritating over time.

Our recommendations

After this flood of info, we couldn’t leave you without our short selection. Here are a few models that match the criteria, depending on your needs.

For urban runners

The new Petzl Swift LT is the perfect compromise. It’s compact, lightweight, and offers multiple brightness modes so you don’t blind people around you. With 380 lumens, it’s also versatile enough to take you onto darker paths once in a while.

Silva also offers a similar model at a similarly affordable price, and it includes a red rear light. It’s the Smini. Its output is lower than the Petzl Swift LT, but it’s still plenty for city running and visibility.

For trail runners

The must-have for trail runners is without a doubt one of Petzl’s models, designed and made in France with a focus on lightweight performance. The obvious pick is the NAO RL with its 1,500 lumens and a battery built to handle anything. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Swift RL is almost as capable, and so is the IKO CORE, which can run on two energy sources (standard batteries and a rechargeable pack). All three are so light you’ll forget they’re on your head.

Another strong competitor is the Distance LT 1100 from Black Diamond, with 1,100 lumens and a tilting optical unit that improves comfort. Its technology helps you save battery by boosting to maximum power only when needed to “grab information,” then dropping back into an efficient 600-lumen mode, for a total of 4h25.

Chest lights, an alternative to headlamps?

With all this information, you’re ready to choose from the huge range of headlamps on the market. But before you decide for good, it’s worth mentioning another option, or rather a complement, to the classic headlamp, chest lights.

More and more popular in trail running and standard road running, they provide great visibility thanks to reflective straps and often a red rear light to signal your presence. It can also feel more comfortable because it reduces load around your neck and limits unwanted bouncing movements.

That said, it doesn’t replace a classic headlamp, which usually has a better-optimized beam than most chest lights on the market. The beam also follows your gaze less naturally, which can be an issue on technical sections where anticipation matters.

Many trail runners now combine both setups, headlamp plus chest light, to improve terrain reading.

For urban runs, it’s still a solution worth considering, offering the same core features with added comfort, depending on personal preference. For chest lights, we can recommend Decathlon models, which are usually very budget-friendly.

You’re now ready to light up the night. In races and in training, you can head out safely with the right running light, full visibility and a clear plan for what best matches your sport. The key models from trusted brands like Petzl, Black Diamond, and Silva won’t have any secrets left for you.

Frequently asked questions about running and trail headlamps

How many lumens do you need for trail running?

For a short trail race on technical singletrack, 400 to 700 lumens is enough. For longer races or ultra-trails like UTMB or the SaintéLyon, plan on at least 1,000 lumens to keep strong visibility on fast and technical sections.

What’s the best trail running headlamp in 2026?

The Petzl NAO RL (1,500 lm) is the go-to reference for ultra-trail thanks to its battery life and power. For a more accessible option, the Petzl Swift RL (1,100 lm, ~100 €) offers the best value for money. On a tighter budget, the Petzl IKO CORE (~70 €) is still an excellent pick with its dual power system.

Which headlamp for city running?

In urban settings, 100 to 300 lumens is enough and helps you avoid blinding other people. The Petzl Swift LT (~50 €) and the Silva Smini (~40 €) are two lightweight, versatile choices.

Do you need a waterproof headlamp for trail running?

Yes, water resistance is essential for trail running. Aim for at least IPX4 (splash resistant), and IPX6 or higher for harsh conditions (heavy rain, mud, ultra-trails). All the Petzl and Black Diamond headlamps mentioned in this article meet these criteria.

How much battery life do you need for an ultra-trail?

For an ultra-trail, plan for at least 6 hours of battery life in normal mode, not eco mode. Some models like the Petzl NAO RL can run up to 80 hours in reserve mode, which gives you plenty of time to recharge or swap batteries between aid stations.

Can you use a chest light instead of a headlamp for trail running?

A chest light is a great complement to improve visibility, especially on roads or for urban running. On technical trails, it doesn’t replace a headlamp because the beam doesn’t follow your eyes, which hurts terrain reading. Most experienced trail runners use both together on long distances.

Shokz (formerly AfterShokz) is now a major player in the world of sports audio gear. The brand stands out thanks to its unique bone conduction technology and its strong commitments to the sports community.

As the official partner of the UTMB World Series and the Paris Marathon, Shokz supports athletes at the most prestigious events and continues to cement its leadership in the market.

Its flagship models, the OpenRun Pro 2 and the OpenSwim Pro, each meet specific needs and appeal to the most demanding runners, trail runners, and swimmers.

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2: the ultimate companion for runners and trail runners

The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is the direct evolution of the previous OpenRun Pro and stands out as one of the best audio headsets for running and trail running.
Thanks to bone conduction technology, users can listen to their favorite music or podcasts while keeping their ears completely free, allowing them to remain alert to their surroundings. This feature is especially valuable for the safety of usersboth in urban environments and in the mountains.

Listening in urban environments

In the city, runners, cyclists, and pedestrians need to stay aware to remain safe. Unlike traditional in-ear headphones that completely block external noise, bone conduction headphones keep the ears open, allowing users to hear traffic noise, public announcements, and conversations around them.
This increased awareness significantly reduces the risk of accidents due to lack of attention and creates a greater sense of security. It also provides better comfort by avoiding the feeling of isolation often experienced in a busy urban environment. For anyone training in the city, the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is an ideal choice, combining listening pleasure with safety.

Listening on the trail or in the mountains

Shokz is a partner of the UTMB World Series, and the OpenRun Pro 2 is a perfect fit for trail running. It allows you to enjoy audio content without being cut off from external sounds. When running on technical mountain trails, hearing nature or other runners greatly improves safety. Just as in the city, where listening for vehicles and pedestrians is essential, the headphones strike the perfect balance between enjoying music and remaining alert.
Thetop sports headphones also deliver richer, more detailed sound, with improved bass compared to the previous model. The redesigned headband provides better stability and enhanced comfort, even over long distances. At a feather-light weight of just 30 grams, the OpenRun Pro 2 is easy to forget once it’s on.

Battery life now reaches 12 hours of continuous listening, covering the majority of long training sessions, mountain hike-runs, or races (since you won’t necessarily listen to music for the entire event). The quick-charge system gives you 2.5 hours of listening with only five minutes of charging.
Its BluetoothⓇ 5.3 connectivity ensures compatibility with most smartphones and GPS watches, while the dual noise-canceling microphone guarantees clear conversations even in noisy environments.

The OpenRun Pro 2 positions itself as the go-to headset for runners and trail runners who want to combine safety, comfort, and audio quality. We found nothing but strengths in these professional running headphones!

Shokz OpenSwim Pro: the 100% waterproof bone conduction headset for swimming

The Shokz OpenSwim Pro is designed for swimmers and triathletes looking for a fully waterproof headset. With an IP68 rating, it easily withstands prolonged immersion and the most demanding aquatic environments. This makes it an ideal partner for swimming in the pool, open water, the sea, or lakes.

A major innovation of this model is that the Shokz OpenSwim Pro now combines Bluetooth functionality with a 32 GB internal memory. This allows you to store playlists or podcasts directly and listen to them underwater, but also to connect the headset to your smartphone during dryland training.

The flexible headband design ensures a perfect fit, even during dives and turns. Bone conduction technology eliminates the need for in-ear buds and provides optimal comfort, even during extended sessions. Battery life reaches 9 hours in Bluetooth mode, easily covering multiple workouts without needing to recharge.

With its dual MP3/Bluetooth mode, large internal memory, and complete waterproofing, the Shokz OpenSwim Pro stands out as the best headset for regular swimmers.

OpenRun Pro 2 or OpenSwim Pro: which one should you choose for your sport?

The two models cater to different profiles. The OpenRun Pro 2 is better suited for road runners, trail runners, and cyclists thanks to its open design, light weight, and extended battery life. The OpenSwim Pro, on the other hand, is primarily intended for swimmers and triathletes who need a fully waterproof bone conduction headset capable of storing their music internally.

Shokz has managed to create audio headsets perfectly adapted to the specific needs of each discipline, while maintaining the comfort and safety that make its bone conduction technology so successful.
